Opernpremiere in Sarasota

HOW TO LISTEN TO US/WIE SIE UNS HOEREN KOENNEN!

                                                                             Susanne und Produzent Bill Davidson

The last time we saw the tall and vocally excellent Baritone Sean Anderson he was George Milton in the Sarasota Opera production of Mice and Men.   Anderson was described as "finding surprising vulnerability in the George, bringing huge passion to his working man's aria.”  by Opera News, in its June 2013 Issue.
This time we sat in a conference room and in this Opera in translation discussed issues of language and translation, German composers writing to German librettos and what to do when the words and the times and the cultures mix and move.
Mozart composed to Italian text, musicians encouraged performance in other countries, the question is what changes and as for Sean , after so many different versions sung and learned, is there a definitive version maybe?
Please join us for this delightful conversation and of course, for the opera itself!

Though a Johann Strauss Jr.  Operetta composed with German in mind, the Sarasota production and it's Dr. Eisenstein speak and sing in perfect English....

Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss, Jr.
The fall 2013 season will open on November 1st with Johann Strauss, Jr.’s operetta Die Fledermaus last seen in Sarasota in 2006.  As the plot unfolds, an elaborate scheme is hatched to expose the womanizing ways of the wealthy Dr. Eisenstein as he attempts to enjoy a night of frivolity at an elaborate Viennese ball before going to jail for a week's presumed unpleasant stay.  Hidden identities and amorous intrigues mixed with a the comedy contained in mistaken identity make for a night of delight lovely story where champagne reigns ! This operetta is a mainstay for new year's eve all over the German opera scene, see it early in Sarasota in November 2013!

Sept. 2013 bis 26. Januar 2014

 -  In 1853, a German immigrant, Johann Bausch joins another German immigrant, Heinrich Lomb.  They develop the Bausch and Lomb Optical in Rochester, New York.

-  In 1879, we see the birth of Oskar Barnack in Lynow, Germany.  He designed the first precision miniature camera, The Leica I in 1924.  His camera initiated the era of 35mm cameras.

-  In 1880 we see the birth of Alfred Wegener in Berlin.  He was a professor of meteorology.  He was convinced all the continents were once one massive continent he named Pangea.  His theory was considered preposterous for many decades.  During the 1960's, the concept of plate tectonics justified his insights.

-  In 1932, Wernher von Braun is named head of Germany's liquid fuel rocket program.

-  In 1955, the new Vienna Opera House is opened in Vienna.

-  And in 1996, the German Shop Closing Law is relaxed, allowing stores to remain open until 8 PM.

The Florida Orchestra Announces Limited On-Stage Seating at Select Masterworks Concerts Kicking Off at Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 on Nov. 8, 9 & 10

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – October 22, 2013 – The Florida Orchestra (TFO) has announced that it will offer limited on-stage seating at ten of this season’s Tampa Bay Times Masterworks concerts starting with Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 on November 8, 9 and 10 in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater.   Priced at $75 for on-stage seating, the number of concertgoers that can be accommodated at each performance ranges from three to ten, depending on the music being presented, as each piece requires different numbers of musicians and specific orchestra configurations on stage.

TFO Chairman Tom Farquhar said, “We are continually exploring ways to reach out to the community, make the orchestra more accessible and enhance that experience for concertgoers.  We hope this new initiative will provide an opportunity for more adventuresome music lovers to see and hear a concert from our musicians’ unique perspective.  The on-stage seating option will also give people a glimpse into the backstage area of what goes on just prior to a concert as well as some of the preparations musicians are making just before going on stage to perform.”

Evening Masterworks Concerts with On-Stage Seating:
  • Nov 8-10: Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1
  • Nov 22-24: Elgar’s Cello Concerto
