                                                           Cafe Maldaner, Wiesbaden,

Nikolaus vor der Tuer: Weihnachtsgedichte und Geschichten!

In this week's show Susanne Nielsen takes us to first to Northern Germany and then twice to Berlin, celebrating the magical time of anticipation of the Christmas holidays. She met Hildburg Buchler-Mueller  who recites a poem in northern German dialect called Plattdeutsch  and then talked about giving Christmas –baking-courses for children.
Then Susanne visited the German American Social Club of New Port Richey and asked about childhood experiences of a couple from Berlin. Finally , she reads as she does every year, the childhood story of her mother, Anneliese Volckheim , who grew up near Berlin. This year you can read the story and see the photo in the December 2012 edition of the German Magazine Das Fenster.
We hope you enjoy this week's show and get into the Christmas holiday spirit with memories of Germany if you are living abroad. The Cultural Center for German Language invites you to join its St. Nikolaus Brunch at “Bon Appetit” restaurant  in Dunedin, Florida next Sunday, December 9, for reservations please call 813-254-5088.                              Bill’s Moment in German Cultural History
Bill and Susanne at the Sarasota Opera

- In 1721, Johann Bach marries Anna Wilcken. His first wife died in 1720.

- In 1791, we see the death of composer Wolfgang Mozart in Vienna, Austria.

- In 1822, we see the birth of Eberhard Faber in Stein, Germany. He and his bother Lothar built a small family pencil business into worlwide firms producing writing instruments and art supplies.

- In 1888, we see the death of Carl Zeiss in Jena, Germany. He opened an optical shop in Jena in 1846, which was to grow into the global Carl Zeiss Optical Corporation.

- In 1914, Austrian troops take Belgrade in WW1.

And in 1969, we see the passing of Claudius Dornier in Zug, Switzerland. He worked for the Zepplin Airship Company as a youth. In 1911, he designed the first all metal airplane and founded the Dornier Aircraft Company, which is today owned by Diamler-Benz.

                                                                Esslingen Marktplatz
