Across the market is the beautiful old City Hall and the market itself is surrounded by many restaurants and shops. "Denk ich an
Esslingen, fällt mir die Burg ein, die über viele Treppen von der Stadt aus zu
erreichen ist und einen wunderbaren Ausblick über die Stadt bietet. Dort hat
schon Vorfreude eingesetzt auf den Weihnachtsmarkt. Die Besonderheit: es gibt
einen Mittelalterlichen Weihnachtsmarkt. Altes Handwerk kann man dort bestaunen
und auch Speisen probieren, die uns heutzutage nicht mehr geläufig sind.Denk ich an Esslingen, fällt mir aber auch die Frauengeschichts-Werkstatt ein, die sehr viele Verdienste von Esslingerinnen in den Archiven ausgegraben und publik gemacht hat. Denn es gibt in jeder Stadt ja nicht nur berühmte Vorfahren, sondern auch weibliche Initiatorinnen in Kunst und Wohltätigkeit. Das Wissen darum wurde zu Tage gefördert und ist nun gedruckt nachlesbar.
Denk ich an Esslingen, fällt mir die Villa Merkel ein, die inmitten eines Parks am Neckar gelegen immer wieder zu interessanten Ausstellungen einlädt. Im dazugehörigen Bahnwärterhäusel gastieren immer wieder Schriftsteller, die sich von der schönen Stadt mit den vielen alten Fachwerkhäusern und lauschigen Winkeln für Poesie und Lyrik inspirieren lassen."

- in 1805, the first performance of Ludwig van
Beethoven's opera, Fidelio, is premiered in Vienna.
- 1n 1828, wee see the death of composer Franz
Schubert in Vienna, Austria. He is best known for his symphonies and
lieder.
- In 1844, We see the birth of Carl Benz. He
built the world's first working automobile powered by an internal combustion
engine. His company would would merge with Daimler in 1926. It was
the Daimler-Benz company which started to produce the Mercedes Benz
automobile.
- In 1899, we see the birth of Bruno Hauptmann in
Kamenz, Germany. In 1934 he was arrested for the kidnapping and murder of
Charles Lindbergh's child. He was executed in 1936 for the crime.
- In 1948, the Free University of Berlin is founded.
