              Unser Interview: Joerg Schlegel ,
ein Deutscher im Cirque du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil ist mit Kooza im Anzug auf Tampa. Dort gibt es bald wieder eine Auffuehrung voller Wagemut und Akrobatik.

The equipment is as simple as it gets: eight chairs and a pedestal. But in this act, the artist uses them to create a 23-foot tower on which to perform a balancing act that displays the human body at the very peak of condition and muscular control.

For the first time in 7 years Cirque du Soleil returns to St. Petersburg
With a big top production

KOOZA Opens November 8, 2012 for a limited engagement Under the white Big Top at Tropicana Field
St Petersburg, FL – Aug. 31, 2012- Cirque du Soleil is thrilled to return to St Petersburg with its big top production, KOOZA. The critically-acclaimed show opens Thursday, November 8 for a limited engagement under the white Big Top at Tropicana Field.

Since its premiere in April of 2007, KOOZA has charmed close to 4 million spectators in North America and Japan. KOOZA will be the 4th big top production to visit the area since 2002.
Tickets are available online at cirquedusoleil.com/kooza.
About KOOZA
Written and directed by David Shiner, KOOZA is a return to the origins of Cirque du Soleil that combines two circus traditions – acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. The show highlights the physical demands of human performance in all its splendor and fragility, presented in a colorful mélange that emphasizes bold slapstick humor.
The name KOOZA is inspired by the Sanskrit word “koza,” which means“box,” “chest” or “treasure,” and was chosen because one of the underlying concepts of the production is the idea of a “circus in a box.”
“KOOZA is about human connection and the world of duality, good and bad,”Shiner said. “The tone is fun and funny, light and open. The show doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it’s very much about ideas, too. As it evolves we are exploring concepts such as fear, identity, recognition and power.”
The show starts with The Trickster bursting onto the scene like a jack-in-a-box right in front of The Innocent, and that is just the first of many surprises to follow. The Innocent’s journey brings him into contact with a panoply of comic characters such as the King, the Trickster, the Heimloss, the Pickpocket, the Obnoxious Tourist and his Bad Dog.
Between strength and fragility, laughter and smiles, turmoil and harmony, KOOZA is set in an electrifying and exotic visual world.

Bill’s Moment in German Cultural History
       -  In 1853, a German immigrant, Johann Bausch joins another German immigrant, Heinrich Lomb.  They develop the Bausch and Lomb Optical in Rochester, New York.

-  In 1879, we see the birth of Oskar Barnack in Lynow, Germany.  He designed the first precision miniature camera, The Leica I in 1924.  His camera initiated the era of 35mm cameras.

-  In 1880 we see the birth of Alfred Wegener in Berlin.  He was a professor of meteorology.  He was convinced all the continents were once one massive continent he named Pangea.  His theory was considered preposterous for many decades.  During the 1960's, the concept of plate tectonics justified his insights.

-  In 1932, Wernher von Braun is named head of Germany's liquid fuel rocket program.

-  In 1955, the new Vienna Opera House is opened in Vienna.

-  And in 1996, the German Shop Closing Law is relaxed, allowing stores to remain open until 8 PM.

Sarasota Youth Opera to present the world premiere of
Little Nemo in Slumberland

Sarasota, FL – Sarasota Youth Opera is proud to present the world premiere of a brand new work, Little Nemo in Slumberland, with music by Daron Hagen and words by J.D. McClatchy, commissioned by the Sarasota Opera Association.  This will mark the Sarasota Youth Opera and Sarasota Opera Association’s 5th commission since the programs inception in 1984.  The child principal roles will be performed by members of the Sarasota Youth Opera program and the adult principal roles will be performed by members of the Sarasota Opera Apprentice and Studio Artists Program.  In addition, singers and performers from Booker High School, Out of Door Academy and Sailor Circus will help to round out the cast making for a total of 107 Sarasota young people on the stage of the Sarasota Opera House.

Little Nemo in Slumberland  Synopsis:
Based on Winsor McCay's early-twentieth-century comic strip, Little Nemo in Slumberland is a 60 minute, two-act magic opera.  The story recounts the adventures of a boy over the course of two nights on a quest to save Slumberland from the evil Emperor Sol who wants it to be bright all night and all day.  Nemo's adventures along the way include encounters with a crystal enchantress, menacing giants, a floating bed and a balloon ride, dizzying changes of scale and a palace that turns upside down.

The Creators:
Daron Hagen, the composer, has established himself as one of the most prolific American composers writing today.  His music enjoys more than a hundred performances a year and has been recorded on over two dozen CDs.  In addition to Sarasota Opera, Mr. Hagen has been commissioned by The Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, The National Symphony, both the Seattle Symphony and Seattle Opera, and the Buffalo Philharmonic.
J.D. McClatchy is one of America's foremost librettists, authors and, poets.  His five collections of poetry, including the Pulitzer Prize-shortlisted Hazmat, are widely acclaimed for their formal ingenuity, coupled with their fluency of thought and feeling.  His opera librettos have been performed in opera houses around the world including the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala and Covent Garden.  Mr. McClatchy has served as Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets and is currently Professor of English at Yale where he edits The Yale Review.

SCRIBE Technology:
Little Nemo in Slumberland will utilize a new leading edge, innovative theater technology, SCRIBE (Self-Contained Rapidly Integratable Background Environment), which was piloted at the University of Kentucky.  This technology, which has been successfully used in productions at the University of Kentucky Opera Theater and The Atlanta Opera, will help meet the creative challenge presented by bringing such a fantasy based story to life.

There will be two performances on Saturday, November 10 at 5:30pm and again on Sunday, November 11 at 12:30pm.  Tickets are available for purchase online at www.sarasotaopera.org or by calling the box office at (941) 328-1300.
