Bill's Moment in German Cultural History

- In 1787, Mozart's opera, Don Giovanni, has it's first performance in Prague.
- In 1825, we see the birth of Johann Strauss II. He was a composer of dance music, operettas, waltzed and polkas. He was known as the "Waltz King."
- In 1899, we see the death of Ottmar Mergenthaler. He invented the linotype machine.
- In 1918 we see the death of Cesar Ritz. He was a restauranteur and hotel owner. He opened two hotels, one in Paris and one in London, known as the Ritz Hotel.
- Also in 1918, a mutiny of German sailors ends the German Navy's portion of WW1.
- In 1920, the League of nations makes it's headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
- And according to German folklore, if it rains on October 31st, St Wolfgang's Day, it is regarded as a promising good year

FLORIDA ORCHESTRA INTERVIEW: Maestro Marcelo Lehninger

Maestro Lehninger directs the Florida orchestra this weekend in a Sibelius/Rachmaninoff concert. He spoke in English with Susanne Nielsen.
Though he has a German father and a brazilian mother, Portugues and English are the maestro's main languages, living in Boston with his family. Please listen to the interview in the audio section of our show.
Find his Biography below and enjoy the concerts in the Tampa bay area this week!
Brazilian-born Marcelo Lehninger is increasingly recognized as one of the most gifted conductors of his generation. Appointed Music Director of the New West Symphony Orchestra in Los Angeles, his growing reputation as a dynamic conductor inspires musicians and audiences of all ages worldwide.

Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Lehninger was selected by James Levine and is the second Brazilian conductor to hold this position; the first was Eleazar de Carvalho, who shared the duties with Leonard Bernstein. His success with the BSO was recognized when his tenure was extended through 2013.

Mr. Lehninger made his BSO debut in 2010 with the violinist Pinchas Zukerman as soloist and in 2011 he stepped in for Maestro Levine on very short notice to conduct the world premiere of Harrison Birtwistle's Violin Concerto and Bartok’s 2nd Violin Concerto with Christian Testzlaff as soloist. In 2012, Mr. Lehninger filled in for Andris Nelsons, conducting a program that included the American premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage's Trumpet Concerto “From the Wreckage” with Håkan Hardenberger as soloist as well as Strauss’ “Thus Spake Zarathustra”. He also successfully conducted a program, without any rehearsals, that included Stravinsky’s Piano and Winds Concerto with Peter Serkin and Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony.

Mr. Lehninger’s made a highly praised debut at Carnegie Hall with the BSO in 2011. Critic Anthony Tommasini wrote in the New York Times: "He was terrific, conducting all three works with impressive technique, musical insight and youthful energy". Maestro Lehninger's other BSO appearances include his Tanglewood debut in the summer of 2012 with pianist Nelson Freire and a subscription week in the 2012/13 season with violinist Joshua Bell.

As a guest conductor in the United States, he has led the Boston, Houston, National, New West, Hartford, Fairfax and Jacksonville symphony orchestras. In Canada, Mr. Lehninger made his debut in 2011 conducting the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra.

Acclaimed by the Washington Post as "an alert, dynamic figure", he served as cover conductor for the National Symphony Orchestra's subscription concerts at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and associate conductor of the Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra in Brazil.

An alumnus of the National Conducting Institute, he made a successful debut with the National Symphony Orchestra in 2007 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and was invited to conduct the NSO again in the summer of 2008.

Mr. Lehninger was music advisor of the Youth Orchestra of the Americas for the 2007-08 season. Placido Domingo serves as artistic advisor for the ensemble, which is composed of 120 talented musicians from more than twenty countries throughout the Americas. In summer of 2008, Maestro Lehninger toured with YOA and pianist Nelson Freire in South America.

In 2001 he placed second in the First Eleazar de Carvalho National Conducting Competition in Rio de Janeiro, subsequently leading all of the top orchestras in Brazil as well as regular guest conducting in Argentina.

Chosen by Kurt Masur, in 2008, Mr. Lehninger was awarded the First Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Scholarship sponsored by the American Friends of the Mendelssohn Foundation. He was Maestro Masur’s assistant with the Orchestre National de France (during their residency at the Musikverein in Vienna), Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig and the New York Philharmonic.

Maestro Lehninger participated in the 2009 Malko Competition in Denmark, leading the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra at Copenhagen's Koncerthuset and in the 2011 Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview, conducting the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.

Upcoming appearances include re-engagements with the Boston, New West, Brazilian and São Paulo Symphony orchestras, Minas Gerais and Hamilton Philharmonic orchestras as well as his debut with the Florida, New Jersey and Seattle Symphonies in the United States, and the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester at the Philharmonie in Berlin, Germany.

Before dedicating his career to conducting, Mr. Lehninger studied violin and piano. He holds a Master's degree from the Conductors Institute at New York's Bard College, where he studied conducting under Harold Farberman and composition with Laurence Wallach. His mentors also include Kurt Masur, Leonard Slatkin, Marin Alsop, Moche Atzmon, Andreás Weiss and Roberto Tibiriçá.

Citizen of Brazil and Germany, Marcelo Goulart Lehninger is the son of pianist Sônia Goulart and violinist Erich Lehninger. Marcelo, his wife Laura and daughter Sofia divide their time between Boston and Los Angeles.

Cirque du Soleil kommt ab 8. 11 in die Tampa Bucht.

The equipment is as simple as it gets: eight chairs and a pedestal. But in this act, the artist uses them to create a 23-foot tower on which to perform a balancing act that displays the human body at the very peak of condition and muscular control.

For the first time in 7 years Cirque du Soleil returns to St. Petersburg
With a big top production

KOOZA Opens November 8, 2012 for a limited engagement Under the white Big Top at Tropicana Field
St Petersburg, FL – Aug. 31, 2012- Cirque du Soleil is thrilled to return to St Petersburg with its big top production, KOOZA. The critically-acclaimed show opens Thursday, November 8 for a limited engagement under the white Big Top at Tropicana Field.

Since its premiere in April of 2007, KOOZA has charmed close to 4 million spectators in North America and Japan. KOOZA will be the 4th big top production to visit the area since 2002.
Tickets are available online at cirquedusoleil.com/kooza.
About KOOZA
Written and directed by David Shiner, KOOZA is a return to the origins of Cirque du Soleil that combines two circus traditions – acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. The show highlights the physical demands of human performance in all its splendor and fragility, presented in a colorful mélange that emphasizes bold slapstick humor.
The name KOOZA is inspired by the Sanskrit word “koza,” which means“box,” “chest” or “treasure,” and was chosen because one of the underlying concepts of the production is the idea of a “circus in a box.”
“KOOZA is about human connection and the world of duality, good and bad,”Shiner said. “The tone is fun and funny, light and open. The show doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it’s very much about ideas, too. As it evolves we are exploring concepts such as fear, identity, recognition and power.”
The show starts with The Trickster bursting onto the scene like a jack-in-a-box right in front of The Innocent, and that is just the first of many surprises to follow. The Innocent’s journey brings him into contact with a panoply of comic characters such as the King, the Trickster, the Heimloss, the Pickpocket, the Obnoxious Tourist and his Bad Dog.
Between strength and fragility, laughter and smiles, turmoil and harmony, KOOZA is set in an electrifying and exotic visual world.

KINOKINOKINO

SARASOTA OPERA  SEASON PREMIERE : RIGOLETTO: OUR INTERVIEW: ELENI CALENOS

Eleni Calenos speaking with Susanne Nielsen at the Sarasota Opera

In her young career, Greek soprano Eleni Calenos is capturing critics and audiences' admiration for the clarity, warmth and beauty of her lyric voice, and her dignified characterizations. Of her 2008 role debut as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, the Houston Press said, "The phenomenon was the Cio-Cio-San of Greek soprano Eleni Calenos, whose nuanced characterization was a true wonder to hear. She sailed through her dramatic arias as if buoyed by the stirring music."

Additional engagements from the past few seasons include Hanna Glawari in Die lustige Witwe (Zomeropera Alden Biesen, Belgium), Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly (Shreveport Opera, Mississippi Opera & Opera Idaho), Mimi in La Bohème (Opera Idaho), Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni and Valencienne in The Merry Widow (Utah Festival Opera), Donna Anna in Don Giovanni (Shreveport Opera), Fiordiligi in Così Fan Tutte (Barbados Music Festival), Giorgetta in Puccini's Il Tabarro (Harrisburg Opera Association), Liù in Turandot (Boston Concert Opera and Chorus Pro Musica), Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro (Opera in the Heights in Houston, OSH Opera in NY, and a cover at the 2010 Glimmerglass Festival as a member of the Young American Artists Program), Medora in Verdi's Il Corsaro (Hellenic Music Foundation, NY), as well as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni (Martina Arroyo Foundation). Of her performance, The New York Times said, "Eleni Calenos sang with a strong, clear soprano and was persuasive as a suffering yet haughty Donna Elvira." Other performed roles in her repertoire include Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, and the title role of Suor Angelica.

Upcoming engagements include Gilda in Rigoletto with Sarasota Opera, and the soprano solo in Mahler's Symphony No. 2 with the Queens College Choral Society in NY. Next season she will be performing Countess Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro with Austin Lyric Opera, and Nedda in I Pagliacci with Shreveport Opera.

(Please listen to the Interview in the audiosection of our show)

We would like to thank Ms. Calenos for the interview and invite our listeners and readers to attend the wonderful season of the Sarasota Opera.

Cirque du Soleil ist mit Kooza im Anzug auf Tampa. Dort gibt es bald wieder eine Auffuehrung voller Wagemut und Akrobatik.
