SARASOTA OPERA  SEASON PREMIERE : RIGOLETTO: OUR INTERVIEW: ELENI CALENOS

Eleni Calenos speaking with Susanne Nielsen at the Sarasota Opera

In her young career, Greek soprano Eleni Calenos is capturing critics and audiences' admiration for the clarity, warmth and beauty of her lyric voice, and her dignified characterizations. Of her 2008 role debut as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, the Houston Press said, "The phenomenon was the Cio-Cio-San of Greek soprano Eleni Calenos, whose nuanced characterization was a true wonder to hear. She sailed through her dramatic arias as if buoyed by the stirring music."

Additional engagements from the past few seasons include Hanna Glawari in Die lustige Witwe (Zomeropera Alden Biesen, Belgium), Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly (Shreveport Opera, Mississippi Opera & Opera Idaho), Mimi in La Bohème (Opera Idaho), Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni and Valencienne in The Merry Widow (Utah Festival Opera), Donna Anna in Don Giovanni (Shreveport Opera), Fiordiligi in Così Fan Tutte (Barbados Music Festival), Giorgetta in Puccini's Il Tabarro (Harrisburg Opera Association), Liù in Turandot (Boston Concert Opera and Chorus Pro Musica), Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro (Opera in the Heights in Houston, OSH Opera in NY, and a cover at the 2010 Glimmerglass Festival as a member of the Young American Artists Program), Medora in Verdi's Il Corsaro (Hellenic Music Foundation, NY), as well as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni (Martina Arroyo Foundation). Of her performance, The New York Times said, "Eleni Calenos sang with a strong, clear soprano and was persuasive as a suffering yet haughty Donna Elvira." Other performed roles in her repertoire include Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, and the title role of Suor Angelica.

Upcoming engagements include Gilda in Rigoletto with Sarasota Opera, and the soprano solo in Mahler's Symphony No. 2 with the Queens College Choral Society in NY. Next season she will be performing Countess Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro with Austin Lyric Opera, and Nedda in I Pagliacci with Shreveport Opera.

(Please listen to the Interview in the audiosection of our show)

We would like to thank Ms. Calenos for the interview and invite our listeners and readers to attend the wonderful season of the Sarasota Opera.

Cirque du Soleil ist mit Kooza im Anzug auf Tampa. Dort gibt es bald wieder eine Auffuehrung voller Wagemut und Akrobatik.

The equipment is as simple as it gets: eight chairs and a pedestal. But in this act, the artist uses them to create a 23-foot tower on which to perform a balancing act that displays the human body at the very peak of condition and muscular control.

For the first time in 7 years Cirque du Soleil returns to St. Petersburg
With a big top production

KOOZA Opens November 8, 2012 for a limited engagement Under the white Big Top at Tropicana Field
St Petersburg, FL – Aug. 31, 2012- Cirque du Soleil is thrilled to return to St Petersburg with its big top production, KOOZA. The critically-acclaimed show opens Thursday, November 8 for a limited engagement under the white Big Top at Tropicana Field.

Since its premiere in April of 2007, KOOZA has charmed close to 4 million spectators in North America and Japan. KOOZA will be the 4th big top production to visit the area since 2002.
Tickets are available online at cirquedusoleil.com/kooza.
About KOOZA
Written and directed by David Shiner, KOOZA is a return to the origins of Cirque du Soleil that combines two circus traditions – acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. The show highlights the physical demands of human performance in all its splendor and fragility, presented in a colorful mélange that emphasizes bold slapstick humor.
The name KOOZA is inspired by the Sanskrit word “koza,” which means“box,” “chest” or “treasure,” and was chosen because one of the underlying concepts of the production is the idea of a “circus in a box.”
“KOOZA is about human connection and the world of duality, good and bad,”Shiner said. “The tone is fun and funny, light and open. The show doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it’s very much about ideas, too. As it evolves we are exploring concepts such as fear, identity, recognition and power.”
The show starts with The Trickster bursting onto the scene like a jack-in-a-box right in front of The Innocent, and that is just the first of many surprises to follow. The Innocent’s journey brings him into contact with a panoply of comic characters such as the King, the Trickster, the Heimloss, the Pickpocket, the Obnoxious Tourist and his Bad Dog.
Between strength and fragility, laughter and smiles, turmoil and harmony, KOOZA is set in an electrifying and exotic visual world.
