In this week’s show,
Susanne Nielsen had the pleasure to speak with New York based Baritone Peter
Kendall Clark, who is sure to make a magnificent Sweeney Todd, the lead in
Stephen Sondheims “dark” Operetta by the same title. St. Petersburg Opera opens its
season October 5,7,and 9, 2012 with this perfect offering for Bay area opera
and operetta fans.
Sweeney Todd –
Der teuflische Barbier aus der Fleet Street ist Tim Burtons 2007 entstandener US Film, der
das gleichnamige Musical einem breiteren Publikum zugaenglich machte. Der Film
lief nur kurz, aber das Broadway Musical aus dem
Jahr 1979 von Stephen Sondheim ist die Geschichte des aus Rache
mordenden Barbiers (im Film war dies Johnny Depp).
In der deutschen Film-Fassung wurden nur die Dialoge
synchronisiert, die Lieder in der Originalsprache mit deutschen
Untertiteln wiedergegeben. Wer nun Peter Kendall Clark auf der Buehne des
Palladium Theaters sieht, gross und recht dueseter perfekt dargestellt, der
erlebt diese Geschichte auf Englisch gesungen und in einer Jahreszeit , wo es
ueberall auf Halloween zugeht, eine Jahreszeit , in der sich besonders in
Europa, denn die Geschichte spielt in England, „die Nebel drehn“. Am 5,7(mit
sonntags- Matinee um 14 uhr) und Dienstag Abend gibt es noch karten an der

Sweeney Todd Interview : Peter Kendall Clark
Sweeney Todd ist ein Musical mit der Musik und den Gesangstexten von Stephen Sondheim. Das Buch schrieb Hugh Wheeler nach einem gleichnamigen Schauspiel von Christopher G. Bond aus dem Jahr 1973. Die Broadway-Uraufführung fand am 1. März 1979 im Uris Theatre, New York statt. In den Hauptrollen waren Len Cariou und Angela Lansbury zu sehen. Nach 557 Vorstellungen fiel der letzte Vorhang am 29. Juni 1980. Die Erstaufführung im Londoner West End fand am 2. Juli 1980 im Theatre Royal Drury Lane statt. Harold Prince führte in beiden Inszenierungen die Regie.
Die deutschsprachige Erstaufführung erfolgte am 11. April 1985 an den Städtischen Bühnen Freiburg.
Sondheim selbst bezeichnete das Werk als tiefschwarze Operette. Die Partitur ist durchkomponiert, es wird fast alles gesungen. Für die Show suchte Sondheim nach Inspiration in der Musik aus Horrorfilmen oder anderen spannenden Filmen. Er fand sie besonders in den Soundtracks von Bernard Herrmann. So ertönt beispielsweise gegen Ende des Stückes in der Todesszene des Richters ein Teil des bekannten Soundtracks des Alfred Hitchcock Klassikers Psycho. Sweeney Todd gewann 1979 neun Tony Awards.
Die dramatische Handlung findet man auf Wikipedia.de: Benjamin Barker, frischgebackener Vater einer Tochter und glücklich verheiratet, wird aufgrund einer Intrige durch den mächtigen Richter Turpin unschuldig angeklagt und verbannt. Benjamins Frau Lucy und die Tochter Johanna geraten unter die Obhut von Richter Turpin. Lucy, getrennt von ihrem Mann, vom Richter vergewaltigt und am Ende ihrer Kräfte, stürzt tief ab und verschwindet, Benjamins Tochter wird daraufhin von Richter Turpin adoptiert.
Die Handlung gleicht der vieler Gruselgeschichten, immer mit Humor und Grausamkeit , die einander zu umschlingen versuchen. Dem Schicksal kann Sweeney Todd und auch seine durch die Umstaende noch lebende Frau nicht entrinnen.

genau seiner Rolle und was man sich darunter vorstellt, entspricht, auch
wenn er noch lange nicht im Kostuem auf der Buehne , sondern in den

Baritone PETER KENDALL CLARK is a distinguished interpreter of contemporary opera and musical theater who also excels in traditional concert and operatic repertoire. He has created roles in numerous world premieres, notably Jehovah in Mark Blitzstein’s Cain, for which the New York Times singled out his singing as “stylish and properly stentorian”. Mr. Clark has sung much of the standard baritone operatic repertoire with many of New York City’s local companies such as Chelsea Opera, Bronx Opera, Liederkranz Opera and One World Symphony. He has enjoyed return engagements with regional companies such as Caramoor, Ash Lawn, and Skylight Opera Theatre. In the 2010-11 season he was heard as the Count in Chelsea Opera’s Le nozze di Figaro, Donner in Liederkranz Opera’s Das Rheingold, as Onegin in Eugene Onegin with Opera Slavica, the High Priest in Samson et Dalila with Hudson Opera Theater and as Don Alfonso (aka Don Fonzarello) in Skylight Opera’s new “Mad Men” version of Cosi fan tutte. As a musical theater singer, Mr. Clark has equal affinity with dramatic, comic and romantic roles. Mr. Clark, who is an accomplished violinist, made his professional theater debut in Fiddler on the Roof as the Fiddler who actually played the violin. He debuted at Skylight Opera Theatre in 2009 as the Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance, and has appeared at Ashlawn Opera as Frank Butler in Annie Get Your Gun, Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady, and as King Arthur Camelot.

Written and directed by David Shiner, KOOZA is a return to the origins of Cirque du Soleil that combines two circus traditions – acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. The name KOOZA is inspired by the Sanskrit word “koza,” which means“box,” “chest” or “treasure,” and was chosen because one of the underlying concepts of the production is the idea of a “circus in a box.”

The show starts with The Trickster bursting onto the scene like a jack-in-a-box right in front of The Innocent, and that is just the first of many surprises to follow. The Innocent’s journey brings him into contact with a panoply of comic characters such as the King, the Trickster, the Heimloss, the Pickpocket, the Obnoxious Tourist and his Bad Dog.
Between strength and fragility, laughter and smiles, turmoil and harmony, KOOZA is set in an electrifying and exotic visual world.

Pianist Sara Davis Buechner explores a kaleidoscope of moods from pensive to spirited jazz-laced motifs in Bernstein’s Symphony No. 2, The Age of Anxiety. The concert also includes Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture and Schumann’s stately yet joyous Symphony No. 3, Rhenish. Conducted by Stuart Malina. Includes a pre-concert talk about the music and the composers, in the concert hall beginning one hour prior to curtain.

It’s a celebration of one of the most popular folk-rock duos of the 60s that set the tone for the times with such signature sounds as Feeling Groovy, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Homeward Bound, I Am a Rock, Mrs. Robinson, Scarborough Fair and The Sounds of Silence, among many more favorites – all with a magical intertwining of Simon & Garfunkel style vocal harmonies, acoustic guitar and your Florida Orchestra. Lead by guest conductor Michael Krajewski.

October 20 and 21: Free Pops in the Park Concerts
Enjoy a picnic under the stars at a free Pops in the Park Concert with guest conductor Stuart Chafetz and The Florida Orchestra in a varied program with music by John Williams and John Phillip Sousa; selections from The Music Man, A Chorus Line and Mission Impossible; hits by Duke Ellington and a musical salute to the 1950s…all with the evening ending in Tchaikovsky’s explosive 1812 Overture. Guests are invited to bring canned food donations for Tampa Bay Harvest's food bank services in the Tampa Bay area. The Vinoy Park concert will have a pre-concert performance from 5:45pm to 6:30pm by two finalists from VSA Florida Young Soloists Competition, who will be representing the State of Florida in the national competition in Washington, DC later this year. VSA Florida provides people with disabilities the opportunity to learn through, participate in and enjoy the arts.
