In the summer of 2014 Susanne
Nielsen met Mr. and Mrs. Krause , two German naturalists who came
to Pasco County, Florida to visit the nudist colony and be the stars in a
two-hour documentary made by the camera team of the German TV station VOX.
Susanne had heard about the colony and learned it is the largest such resort in
all of the US. Land o"lakes honorary ambassador Pam Oakes invited her to
meet the team and Susanne spoke with Monique Liliensieg and
her stars, Mr. and Mrs. Krause, who would later visit the clothing optional
resort. The West Pasco County Chamber of Commerce welcomed the Germans and were
very pleased about all the interest by VOX TV.

Der Begruender der Naturalistenbewegung der USA bereitete den Weg fuer die Lando'Lakes Nudistenkolonie und die Familie Krause, die die Stars einer Dokumentation zum Thema FKK in den USA hier in Florida drehten. Die oertliche Handelskammer freute sich ueber das Interesse und hiess die Besucher aus Deutschland herzlich willkommen, fehlt doch in den USA sowohl als auch in Deutschland der Nachwuchs fuer diese Resorts. Pensionaere leben den FKK Stil, der mit Koerperertuechtigung und Ruhe vom Stress des Altags sicherlich auch fuer eine juengere Generation ihre Vorteile haette. Ob die zweistuendige VOX TV Dokumentation dies bewerkstelligen kann? Unsere Sendung verfolgt die Begruessung durch die Stadtvaeter , darunter County Commissioner Pat Mulieri, die ihre deutschen Wurzeln hervorbrachte, sie habe dereinst mit Maedchenname "Hans" gehiessen, und sich wie alle anderen am Tisch, ueber die Werbung fuer ihre Resorts freute. Fotos unter Spanish Moss und spaeter fuer Krauses FKK Fahrten im Golfwaegelchen, mit dem bekleideten Kamerateam daneben. Gang durch den subtropischen Wald, schoen fandens die Nuernberger Sportbarbesitzer, wie "Balsam auf der Haut" und von den Amerikanischen Naturalisten im Resort, erstaunt fuer die Deutschen, Kuesschen und Umarmungen ueberall, soviel Herzlichkeit war man von Deutschland, noch Kroatien, wo man sonst FKK Straende findet, nicht gewohnt. Man koennte nach Florida wiederkommen. Zum Schluss hiess es, dass man sich hier sogar das Ja-Wort noch einmal geben koenne, in Florida unter Spanish Moss beim Sonnenuntergang, na bitte!

Lee Baxandall (* 26. Januar 1935 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin; † 28. November 2008 ebenda) war ein US-amerikanischer Schriftsteller, Übersetzer und Aktivist der amerikanischen Nudismusbewegung.
Leben und Wirken[Bearbeiten]
Baxandell war in seiner Kindheit und Jugend in der Pfadfinderbewegung aktiv. Nach dem Besuch der High School seiner Heimatstadt studierte er von 1953 bis 1958 an der University of Wisconsin-Madison. In den 1960er Jahren lebte er in New York, wo er sich in der linken Szene als Dramatiker, Essayist und Kritiker etablierte und in Zeitschriften wie The Drama Review, Partisan Review, The Village Voice, Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism und Science and Society publizierte.
Nach dem Tod seines Vaters 1970 kehrte er in seine Heimatstadt zurück und übernahm die Baxandall Company, einen Verlag für Erziehungsliteratur. In dieser Zeit entstand auch sein Interesse für die Nudismusbewegung, und er gründete die The Naturist Society (TNS) und deren Zeitschrift Clothed with the Sun (später Nude and Natural bzw. N Magazine). Auf seine Anregung entstanden auch 1983 die Gay Naturists International. 1990 gründete Baxandell das Naturist Action Committee, 1993 die The Naturist Education Foundation. In den 1980er und 1990er Jahren gab er den Lee Baxandall’s World Guide to Nude Beaches and Resorts heraus.
Neben Theaterstücken, Gedichten und Essays verfasste Baxandell literaturtheoretische und -kritische Schriften, darunter Radical Perspectives in the Arts, Marxism and Aesthetics und (mit Stefan Morawski) Marx & Engels on Literature and Art und wurde als Übersetzer von Dramen Bertolt Brechts bekannt. Als passionierter Kunstsammler machte er sich besonders um das Werk des lange ignorierten Malers Robert Koehler verdient.

Offiziell wurde die Amerikanische FKK-Gesellschaft 1980 gegründet. Inoffiziell aber, geht deren Geschichte noch viel weiter zurück, an die amerikanische "freien Strand"-Bewegung der 1970er Jahre, und noch früher, an einen „Back-to-nature“ Ethos, während in Europa die industriellen Revolution entstand.
Vielleicht war seine bekanntesten Vorläufer die Freikörperkultur-Bewegung, die in Deutschland an der Wende zum letzten Jahrhundert ihren Hoehpunkt hatte. Diese Freikörperkultur oder FKKbewegung war manchmal eine gelernte und manchmal eine spontane Reaktion auf die Auswüchse einer sich rasch industrialisierenden Gesellschaft. Abgeschnitten von der Natur und zunehmend urbanisiert ,reagierte der Deutsche in den ersten beiden dekaden des 20.Jahrhunderts, indem er das Leben in der freien Natur unbekleidet genoss.
Um es richtig zu beschreiben , es war mehr als das.. Nacktheit der FKK Art wurde von eine erneute Betonung auf Fitness und Gesundheit, und eine wachsende Wertschätzung der natürlichen Welt begleitet. Es gab Nacktwanderungen und Besuche in der Strand, FKK-Bewegungs Therapien und eine übergreifende Überzeugung, dass der nackte menschliche Koerper gepflegt und respektiert werden sollte, nicht grob und sündhaft vernachlaessigt, somit waren hygiene und Bewgung ein wichtiger Bestandteil dieser neuen Lebensanschauung. .
In Amerika entwickelte sich so eine Denkweise erst langsam . So genannte Naturalisten (FKK)-Kolonien haben hier existiert, aber es gab nichts, was als eine Bewegung beschrieben werden könnte. "Freikörperkultur" in Amerika war in Klausur und galt als Geheimnis; nicht ganz eine subversive Aktivität, aber weit entfernt vom „Mainstream“.
Erst seit den 1960er Jahren, einer Zeit der intensiven sozialen, kulturellen und politischen Verfestigung, dass sich die Einstellung zur naturalistenbewegung zu ändern begann. Und an der Spitze dieser Einstellungs-Änderung war Lee Baxandall, der Mann, der ideal war, um Die FKK-Gesellschaft zu stuetzen. Baxandall arbeitete in New York als Schriftsteller, Herausgeber und Kritiker, und machte gelegentliche Ausflüge nach Cape Cod mit seiner Frau und seinen kleinem Sohn. Alle drei gingen dort Nacktbaden und freundeten sich mit einer kleinen, aber engagierten Gruppe von Gleichgesinnten an.
Macht man einen schnellen Vorlauf bis 1974 und die Grundlagen dessen, was TNS ( The Naturalist Society) begannen Gestalt anzunehmen. Das war das Jahr, als offizielle Versuche, Nacktbaden am Cape Cod National Seashore zu verbieten intensiviert wurden. Es war auch das Jahr, als Baxandall als freier Strand-Aktivist bekannt wurde.
Mit einem Hintergrund im Schreiben und redaktioneller Arbeit und einem Händchen für Organisation, war Baxandall in freien Strand Kreisen bald sehr gefragt. Es war, natürlich die Vor-Internet-Welt, und das Wort über freie Strände und wie sie zu schützen waren, war eine Frage der schriftlichen und gedruckten gewaltigen Aufgabe. Wie der Zufall es wollte, war es eine Aufgabe fuer die Baxandalls Talente perfekt geeignet waren.
Mit Ad-hoc-Strand Zeitungen, Strand Proteste, und bei einer Gelegenheit im Jahr 1976 eine spezielle "skinny-Löffel Ausgabe" einer vierteljährlichen sozialpolitischen Zeitschrift , die er mitbegründete, wurde Baxandall zu einer einflussreichen Stimme in der schnell wachsenden „Free“-Strand-Bewegung.
Bald fand er sich im Mittelpunkt der wichtigsten FKK-Veranstaltungen wie die Bildung des Free Beach Ausschusses, der gegruendet wurde, um Nacktbaden auf Cape Cod zu retten; die Einweihung des „National Nude Weekend“ 1976 (jetzt „Nude Recreation“ Woche); und die Gründung des Dokumentations-Zentrums fuer Freie Strände , eine Art Pressezentrale für Nord Amerikanische Naturisten.
Das Hotel lag in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, USA, und hier, in Baxandalls Heimatstadt, war das Dokumentationszentrum die Bühne für TNS. Baxandall war nach Oshkosh zurückgekehrt, um im Familiengeschäft, ein Marketing-und Werbeunternehmen fuer Berufsausbildungsmaterialien zu helfen. Durch einen glücklichen Zufall arbeitete das Familienunternehmen eng mit Druckereien und Verlagen zusammen, und das gab Baxandall eine Idee: Warum nicht seine Rolle als Leiter des Dokumentationszentrums zu erweitern, indem Sie ein Verlag für die wachsenden nordamerikanische Freistrand Bewegung gruendeten?
Damit wurden zwei wichtige Publikationen geboren. Die erste war „ World Guide zu Naturalist Beaches“and recreation, die bald zum Bestseller-Reiseführer wurden und noch heute sind. Sie bleibt eine der angesehensten Ressourcen ihrer Art. Die zweite, ist The Sun (jetzt Nude & Natural, oder N) Bekleidet war eine vierteljährliche gebildet, um eine Kultur der Körperakzeptanz zu fördern, mit FKK-und Wohn als Zentralpunkt. Im Jahr 1981 gegründet ,ist das Magazin heute ein Eckpfeiler der TNS, die im 1980 mit Baxandall als Besitzer und Präsident gegründet wurde.
Von Anfang an war die Naturalistengesellschaft einer Form der Freikörperkultur, die sich auf Basisaktivismus und Mitglieder- Teilnahme konzentriert ,gewidmet. Die Wahl des Wortes Naturalisten im Namen sagt dies aus. Der Begriff wurde in Europa weit verbreitet, um familienfreundliche, körperfreundliche Orte, Tätigkeiten und Haltungen damit zu bezeichnen, und gleichzeitig frei von den negativen Anklaengen, die die "FKK" Bewegung sich im Laufe der Jahre ausgesetzt sah.
In den 20-plus Jahren seit seiner Gründung hat die TNS sich mit der Zeit verändert. Um ihre Mission als Mitgliedsorganisation zu familienfreundlichen FKK gewidmet zu unterstreichen, startete TNS Jahresversammlungen in ausgewählten Clubs und Resorts
in den Vereinigten Staaten. Heute stehen diese Treffen im Mittelpunkt der TNS Erfahrung und bietet Workshops und eine Reihe von Gesellschafts-, Freizeit-, und Kulturaktivitäten, natuerlich alle als FKK Veranstaltungen „all-clothing optional“, natürlich.
In den frühen 90er Jahren, mit der wachsenden Opposition gegen FKK von der religiösen Rechten konfrontiert ,wurden zwei verbündete Organisationen gebildet. Das gemeinnützige FKK Aktionskomitee wurde fuer die TNS zum rechtlichen, politischen und Lobby Arm, während die FKK-Education Foundation, die auch gemeinnützig ist, die Herausforderung zur Förderung der Freikörperkultur gegenueber einer manchmal skeptischen Öffentlichkeit zur Aufgabe nahm.
Im neuen Jahrhundert wurden diese Herausforderungen in vielfältiger Weise-durch lokale und regionale Gruppen in TNS FKK-Netzwerk erfüllt; durch Rechts-und Lobbying-Aktivitäten; durch Meinungsumfragen, die der Öffentlichkeit weit verbreitete Toleranz von Nudisten die Nutzung ausgewählter öffentlicher Gebiete zu ermoeglichen; und durch Bildungs-und Informations Bemuehungen, die die familienfreundliche Art des TNS- FKK Lebens betonen.
Anfang 2002 ging Baxandall in den Ruhestand, und uebertrug die Verwaltung von TNS an Nicky Lee Hoffman und Margaret Thornton.
Während das Management-Team neu ist, bleibt das TNS Engagement für Freikörperkultur und die Betonung auf Mitglieds- Beteiligung so stark wie eh und je. Blick in die Zukunft, ist die Herausforderung, TNS Mitglieder zu behalten und neue zu gewinnen .
Wie jede Organisation muss TNS sich dem Wandel anpassen, aber das bedeutet nicht, dass sie ihre Grundprinzipien aus den Augen verlieren. Die zentrale Idee, die zuerst von Lee artikuliert wurde, bildet noch heute den leitfaden der FKK-Gesellschaft: "Body Akzeptanz ist die Idee, FKK ist der Weg."
Wer war Lee Baxandall?
Baxandall geboren wurde in Oshkosh, Wisconsin geboren und wuchs dort auf. Er besuchte die Universität von Wisconsin in Madison, wo er einen 1957 den BAund 1958 den MA in den Faechern Deutsch und Englisch erhielt, er studierte Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft fuer die Promotion und wurde einer der Herausgeber der Studies on the Left, einer intellektuellen Zeitschrift der Neuen Linken, die für ihre Freilaufqualitäten bekannt war. Im Jahr 1960 reiste nach Baxandall ins revolutionäre Kuba. Im Jahr 1962 heiratete er Roslyn Fraad; als eine frühe Aktivistin der Frauenbewegung bekannt , sie hatten einen Sohn, Phineas . Sie lebten1962-1977 in New York City und waren sie in der Bewegung, den Vietnamkrieg zu beenden, aktiv.
In den 1960er und 1970er Jahren zeigteBaxandall ein starkes Interesse an der Beziehung zwischen Kultur, insbesondere Theater und Radikalismus. Er übersetzte Theaterstücke von Peter Weiss und Bertolt Brecht, bearbeitet eine Sammlung von Schriften, die von der deutschen Sozialkritiker und Psychologe Wilhelm Reich, erstellt eine kommentierte Bibliographie über Marxismus und Ästhetik, und schrieb zahlreiche Essays über die wichtigsten literarischen Figuren, darunter Bertolt Brecht und Franz Kafka. Im Jahr 1965 hielt er Vorlesungen an der Freien Universität von New York am "marxistische Ansätze zu den Avant-Garde Arts. [1] Im Jahr 1973 gab er eine Sammlung von Schriften von Karl Marx und Friedrich Engels über Kunst und Literatur mit polnischen Philosophen Stefan Morawski . Baxandall ist schriftlich erschien in einer Vielzahl von Veranstaltungsorten, von linken Zeitschriften wie The Nation, New Politik, The National Guardian, und Befreiung, zu Mainstream-Publikationen wie der New York Times und geistig-kulturelle Verkaufsstellen wie Partisan Review, The Journal für Ästhetik und Kunstkritik und Neue deutsche Kritik.
Naturismus würden von den späten 1970er Jahren werden im Mittelpunkt der Baxandall Aktivismus. Er nahm die erste Tätigkeit als Eagle Scout in Wisconsin und würde einen Freistrand in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren häufig mit seiner Familie in Cape Cod National Seashore. Im Jahr 1974 reiste er an die Westküste der Vereinigten Staaten, um Gründer des freien Strand Bewegung dort zu treffen: Eugene Callen und CEC Cinder. Dies wurde am Strand USA. Nachdem im Jahr 1970 geerbt Verlagsgeschäft seiner Familie in Oshkosh, die er von da hinten reisen monatlich und dann von dort zu verlagern dauerhaft im Jahr 1978 gelang, begann Baxandall Free Strände Magazin veröffentlichen und die Free Strände Dokumentationszentrum, das Sammeln von Daten aus der ganzen Welt am FKK-Strände. Im Jahr 1980, Lee Baxandall der World Guide veröffentlicht er FKK-Strände und Erholung, Farb Ratgeber Ortung Orten auf der ganzen Welt zu gehen nackt, die er in immer durch große Buch Kanäle gelungen. Es wurde mehrfach aktualisiert und erneut veröffentlicht, die zuletzt im Jahr 1996.
Baxandall war der Ansicht, dass die Freikörperkultur gefördert Körper Akzeptanz und brach die Entfremdung und Unterdrückung, die in der Art und Weise der Realisierung des vollen menschlichen Potentials stand. Er gründete die FKK-Gesellschaft im Jahr 1980 und war der erste Redakteur der Zeitschrift, mit der Sonne, im Jahr 1981 ins Leben gerufen und umbenannt Nude & Natural 1989 bekleidet. Die FKK-Gesellschaft begrüßte alle von Nackt Biker Homosexuell und Lesben und Transgender Naturisten Nacktmassage und alle dazwischen, im Gegensatz zu den eher konservativen Amerika Sonnen Association, jetzt als die American Association for Nude Recreation bekannt. Baxandall ist ein Mitglied ihrer FKK-Ruhmeshalle.
Baxandall war einer der Begründer, zusammen mit Eugene Callen, der "Nationale Nude Weekend," später "Nationale Nude-Woche", die er verwendet, um die Aufmerksamkeit der Medien für die Sache zu erzeugen. Er half bei der Organisation und Sponsor des ersten bundesweiten und regionalen später jährlichen FKK-Versammlungen, Seminaren und mit nackten Spaß für jedermann. Er beauftragte auch Edin und Ethel Vélez, um eine Reihe von Videos (World of Nackt baden, etc.), das den FKK-Lifestyle und entlarven Mythen rund um FKK zu produzieren.
Baxandall gründete die FKK-Aktionskomitees, die primäre Gruppe für Frühwarnung und Verteidigung gegen die, die Naturisten aus der Existenz in den Vereinigten Staaten Gesetze erlassen würde, verantwortlich. Er war der erste, der die Dienste eines professionellen Lobbyisten zu behalten, um der Bewegung Sicht in Landtagen und Kongress gehört zu bekommen. Er gründete die FKK-Education Foundation zur Verbesserung der Bekanntheit und Akzeptanz der Freikörperkultur und Körperakzeptanz in Nordamerika gewidmet.
Im Jahr 1992 heiratete Baxandall, um Lebensgefährtin Johanna Moore. Im Jahr 1995 wurde Baxandall mit der Parkinson-Krankheit diagnostiziert, und er zog sich aus dem öffentlichen Leben von 2002 bis zu seinem Tod am 28. November, 2008.

- In 1898 we see the birth of Aircraft designer Willy Messerschmitt in Frankfort, Germany. His work with the Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm corporation developed the fighter aircraft of the Messerschmitt name.

The Fall season opens on October 31, 2014 with a revival of Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo. In true theatrical tradition, a clown must go on with the comedy despite his real life humiliation at his wife's infidelity. In partnership with the Sarasota Orchestra, this opera features the iconic tenor aria "Vesti la giubba." Pagliacci will run for 6 performances through November 15th.
Saturday, February 21st, will be the Sarasota premiere of The Golden Cockerel by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Based on a story by Pushkin, The Golden Cockerel is the tale of the bumbling King Dodon who enlists the help of a magical Golden Cockerel to protect his country from attack. However, when the King is seduced by the alluring Queen Shemakha, both he and his country meet an unhappy end. Once a favorite show piece for coloratura sopranos like Lily Pons and Beverly Sills, this rarely heard masterpiece by the composer of Scheherazade is a fairy tale filled with exotic and beautiful music such as the famous aria "Hymn to the Sun."

A Sarasota Opera production
The Fall season opens on October 31, 2014 with a revival of Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo. In true theatrical tradition, a clown must go on with the comedy despite his real life humiliation at his wife's infidelity. In partnership with the Sarasota Orchestra, this opera features the iconic tenor aria "Vesti la giubba." Pagliacci will run for 6 performances through November 15th.
Tenor Michael Robert Hendrick, who won critical success for his recent performances as Erik in The Flying Dutchman and Lennie in Of Mice and Men, will return to sing Canio. He will be joined by the stellar sopranoDanielle Walker as Nedda who dazzled the audience with her performance as Hélène in last season's production of Verdi's rarely seen Jérusalem. Sarasota favorite Marco Nisticò (The Barber of Seville) will return as Tonio. Maestro Victor DeRenzi will conduct and Stephanie Sundine will direct.
A perfect first opera for new operagoers, the less than two-hour Pagliacci will be followed by a new addition to the fall season. Following each performance the audience and artists will be invited to mingle at an after-party in the Opera House courtyard (weather permitting). A cash bar will be available.

Sarasota Youth Opera, the most comprehensive youth opera program in the United States, will present a remount of its acclaimed production of The Hobbit by Dean Burry on the Sarasota Opera main stage. Sarasota Youth Opera presented the U.S. premiere of this opera in 2006. The prequel to The Lord of the Rings, the opera recounts how the comfort-loving Bilbo Baggins, unwillingly dragged into a heroic quest, accidentally acquires the golden ring of power.

Opening the Sarasota Opera Winter Festival Season on Saturday, February 7th will be Tosca, Giacomo Puccini's powerful melodramma about a tempestuous diva whose jealousy leads to tragedy. Two of Sarasota Opera's favorite artists will return to reprise their respective roles from 2009. Soprano Kara Shay Thomson (Vanessa, Cavalleria rusticana) returns as the volatile opera singer, and tenor Rafael Dávila (Otello, I Lombard alla prima crociatai) returns as her lover Cavaradossi. The role of Scarpia will be shared by two of opera's leading baritones today. Baritone Mark Walters (Die Fledermaus, Lakmé), described by Opera News as "a force to be reckoned with," will sing all performances through March 22nd; baritone Todd Thomas, who has sung more than 50 performances with Sarasota Opera including Scarpia in 2009, will sing the final two performances. Maestro Victor DeRenzi will conduct and Martha Collins will direct.

On Valentines Day, Saturday, February 14th, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's masterpiece The Marriage of Figaro will return to the Sarasota Opera stage. In her efforts to thwart the lecherous advances of the Count Almaviva, Susanna and her fiancée Figaro join the Countess Almaviva, to outwit the countess’ husband. Making their Sarasota Opera debuts this season, soprano Maeve Höglund will sing the role of Susanna and Uruguayan soprano María Antúnez will sing Countess Almaviva. Baritone Philip Cutlip (Hansel and Gretel) returns to sing the role of her betrothed Figaro and Sarasota Opera veteran baritone Sean Anderson (Die Fledermaus, Of Mice and Men) will return as Susanna's pursuer Count Almaviva.
Stage Director Allison Grant (The Magic Flute), will return to direct and Maestro Marcello Cormio (The Barber of Seville) will conduct.

Sarasota Opera Premiere/Verdi Cycle Opera
In the penultimate year of it's acclaimed Verdi Cycle, Sarasota Opera will present Verdi's epic Don Carlos in the original Paris version which premiered in 1867. Sarasota Opera previously performed the revised four-act La Scala version in 2009. Verdi's powerful drama recounts the ill-fated attraction between Don Carlos and Elisabeth, the wife of his father, King Philip of Spain. Set in Renaissance Spain dominated by the inquisition, this powerful drama is one of opera’s great masterpieces.
Soprano Michelle Johnson, whose career trajectory has taken off since winning the 2011 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, will make her Sarasota Opera debut as Élisabeth de Valois. Returning artists include tenor Jonathan Burton (Turandot) who sings the title role of Don Carlos and mezzo-soprano Mary Phillips (Ariadne auf Naxos, The Tales of Hoffmann) who will sing the role of Eboli. Reprising their roles from the 2009 four-act La Scala version of Don Carlos, bass-baritone Kevin Short (The Flying Dutchman, A King for a Day) will sing King Philippe II and baritone Marco Nisticò (The Barber of Seville, Rigoletto) sings the role of Rodrigue. MaestroVictor DeRenzi will conduct and Stephanie Sundine will direct.

ABOUT SARASOTA OPERA
Based in Florida’s beautiful Gulf Coast, Sarasota Opera is approaching its 55th consecutive season. In 1960, the company began presenting chamber-sized repertoire in the historic 320-seat Asolo Theater on the grounds of Sarasota’s Ringling Museum of Art. Recognizing the need for a theater more conducive to opera, the company purchased the former A.B. Edwards Theater in downtown Sarasota in 1979 and first performing in it in 1984 as the Sarasota Opera House. The theater has just undergone a $20-million renovation and rehabilitation enhancing audience amenities, while updating the technical facilities including increasing the size of the orchestra pit. The theater, which reopened in March 2008, has been called “one of America’s finest venues for opera” by Musical America.

The Florida Orchestra Appoints Michael Francis As Music Director
ST. PETERSBURG, FL – June
24, 2014 – The Florida Orchestra (TFO) has announced the
appointment of Michael Francis as its new Music Director starting with the
2015/2016 season, serving as Music Director Designate for the upcoming
2014/2015 season. Appointed as part of an initial three-year
contract, his duties include being the primary conductor and providing the
artistic leadership for concert programming and related artistic
decisions. Although his primary role is with the Tampa Bay Times
Masterworks series, he will also be conducting one concert each season for the
Raymond James Pops and the morning Coffee Concert series. This reflects
Francis’ personal desire to be fully-integrated artistically with the
orchestra and the organization.

array of conductors will lead the orchestra next season, including these TFO

Symphony in Oregon. In addition, there are nine returning guest

Pianist Jeremy Denk makes his TFO debut in Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 3. Returning
pianists include Peter Serkin in
Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Pascal Rogé in Saint-Saens’ Piano Concerto No. 2 and William Wolfram in Copland’s Piano Concerto. TFO vocalist debuts include soprano Elizabeth Caballero, and baritone Cameron McPhail in Orff’s Carmina Burana and soprano Talise Trevigne in Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915. Featured violin soloists include Jennifer Koh in Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, along with the return
engagements of Karen Gomyo in
Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5, “Turkish”
and TFO concertmaster Jeffrey Multer
in Barber’s Violin Concerto. Additional soloists include TFO principal horn
Robert Rearden in Richard Strauss’ Horn Concerto No. 2 and TFO principal
bassoon Anthony Georgeson in Mozart’s
Bassoon Concerto.
The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay:
Under the
leadership of music and artistic director James
Bass, The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay will join the orchestra for three
masterworks programs on the 2014/2015 season: Orff’s Carmina
Burana and Faure’s Requiem.
In addition, the women’s
chorus of The Master Chorale will perform for Holst’s The Planets. A highly
select, 150-voice, all-volunteer chorus of singers from the entire Tampa Bay
area, The Master Chorale has performed and premiered many symphonic choral
works under the direction of Stefan Sanderling, Jahja Ling, Robert Shaw, John
Nelson, Julius Rudel, founding music director emeritus Robert Summer and
Jo-Michael Schiebe. The chorale has also
performed abroad at London’s Westminster Cathedral and King’s College Chapel in
Cambridge, among other locales.
Designated in 1989 as the principal chorus of TFO, some of its most
recent performances with the orchestra include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Delius’s Sea
Drift and Appalachia (recorded
live in concert on the Naxos label in 2012), Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem, Dvorak’s Requiem, Schubert’s Mass No. 6, Verdi’s Requiem,
Mendelssohn’s Elija, Haydn’s The Creation and Mahler’s second and
third symphonies. The Chorale will also
perform Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé in
the full ballet score version to close the orchestra’s 2013/14 season.
MUSIC AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR JAMES BASS: Dr.
James K. Bass, Grammy-nominated singer and conductor, is the director of choral
studies in the School of Music at the University of South Florida (USF) and the
artistic and music director of The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay. At USF, he conducts the University Chamber
Singers, Collegium and the Collegiate Singers, in addition to teaching graduate
and undergraduate courses in choral conducting, philosophy, and
literature. Previously, he was on the
faculty at Western Michigan University and the University of Central Florida in
Orlando. Bass received the doctor of
musical arts degree from the University of Miami–Florida, where he was a

Bass was selected by the master conductor of the Amsterdam Baroque Soloists, Ton Koopman, to be one of only 20 singers for a presentation of Cantatas by J.S. Bach in Carnegie Hall, and was an auditioned member of Robert Shaw’s workshop choir at Carnegie Hall. He is one of 13 singers on the Grammy-nominated disc A Seraphic Fire Christmas. Bass is an active bass soloist and has performed at Winchester Cathedral in London, has sung three world-premieres of large works, and appears on CD recordings on the Albany and Seraphic Fire Media label. As a bass soloist, he has appeared with the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas, as well as with TFO, Grand Rapids Symphony, Back Bay Chorale and Orchestra, and Firebird Chamber orchestra.
Bass is a bass member and chorus master for Seraphic Fire, the Miami-based professional choir, and was appointed choirmaster for the Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria. During the summer of 2011, he co-founded the Professional Choral Institute at the University of South Florida. In its inaugural year of recording, Seraphic Fire and PCI received the Grammy nomination for Best Choral performance for their recording of Johannes Brahms' Ein Deuthches Requiem. He has prepared choirs for Sir Colin Davis, Sir David Willcocks, Jahja Ling, Michael Tilson Thomas, Stefan Sanderling, Markus Huber and Robert Shaw. Bass has served on the Executive Board of the American Choral Directors Association Central Division as College Repertoire and Standards chairperson. His professional affiliations include the American Choral Directors Association, Music Educators National Conference, American Symphony Orchestra League, Pi Kappa Lambda national music honor society, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity.

In addition to the many
familiar works being offered, next season’s Masterworks series includes ten TFO
premieres, which include four works by American composers: John Adams’ Lollapalooza, Charles Ives’ Central

and Barber’s Mutations from Bach for

series opens with New York Philharmonic assistant conductor Joshua
Weilerstein leading The Florida Orchestra with Peter Serkin as the
soloist in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.
1. The program also includes Rachmaninoff’s final
composition Symphonic Dances, along
with the TFO premiere of John Adams’ Lollapalooza.

Concerto – Oct. 24, 25 & 26, 2014
Chief conductor and artistic advisor to Sweden’s
Norrköping Symphony Orchestra,
Michael
Francis leads The Florida Orchestra
with TFO concertmaster Jeffrey Multer as the soloist in
Barber’s Violin Concerto. New world meets old world in this program
that includes Elgar’s Symphony No. 1 and the TFO premiere of Ives’ Central Park in the Dark.
3) Carmina Burana –
Nov. 14, 15 & 16, 2014
Music director and conductor of the Eugene
Symphony, Danail Rachev makes his TFO conducting
debut with The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay and the Tampa Bay Children’s Chorus
in Orff’s Carmina Burana. Soprano
Elizabeth Caballero and baritone Cameron McPhail
will make their TFO debuts with these performances. The program also includes Schubert’s Rosamunde Overture and Debussy’s Nocturnes.
4) New World Symphony – Dec. 5, 6 & 7, 2014
In celebration of the 150th
anniversary of the birth of Richard Strauss, TFO principal horn Robert Rearden is the soloist for the
TFO premiere of Strauss’ Horn Concerto
No. 2. Past chief conductor of the
Munich Radio Orchestra and current artistic partner to the St. Paul Chamber
Orchestra, Roberto Abbado makes his
TFO conducting debut on a program that also includes Brahms’ Tragic Overture and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.”
5) Tchaikovsky’s
Violin Concerto – Jan. 16, 17 & 18, 2015
Former music director of
the National Opera of Lorraine and the Orchestre Symphonique et Lyrique de
Nancy in France, Tito Muñoz conducts
violinist Jennifer Koh in
Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. The program opens with the TFO premiere of
American composer Adam Schoenberg’s Canto
and the evening concludes with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4.
6) Romeo and Juliet
– Jan 23, 24 & 25, 2015
Former
music director of the Seattle Symphony, Gerard
Schwarz, conducts TFO in a program featuring pianist William Wolfram in Aaron Copland’s Piano Concerto. This concert
also includes Samuel Barber’s Mutations
from Bach for Brass and Timpani, Rimsky-Korsakov’s
The Tsar’s Bride Overture and a suite
of selections from Prokofiev’s
ballet Romeo and Juliet.
7) Faure’s Requiem
– Feb. 7 & 8, 2015
The chief conductor and artistic advisor to
Sweden’s Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Michael Francis will lead
TFO in a second engagement during the 2014/2015 season that showcases The
Master Chorale of Tampa Bay in Faure’s Requiem with soprano Lauren
Snouffer and baritone Sean Plumb. This
French-themed concert also includes Henri Dutilleux’s virtuosic piece Métaboles
and the TFO premiere of Maurice Ravel’s Ma
Mère L’Oye (Mother Goose) in the complete ballet score version.
8) Beethoven’s
Symphony No. 4 – Feb 20, 21 & 22, 2015
French pianist Pascal Rogé will be the soloist with
the orchestra in Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto
No. 2 under the baton of Perry So,
the
associate conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic. The concert will open with Wagner’s Overture to Tannhäuser and conclude with Beethoven’s
Symphony No. 4.
9) Mozart &
Brahms – Feb. 27, 28 & Mar. 1, 2015
In his second
engagement on the upcoming season, New York Philharmonic assistant
conductor Joshua Weilerstein leads TFO with Karen Gomyo as the
soloist in Mozart’s Violin Concerto No.
5, “Turkish.” Other works on the
program include Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 and
the TFO premiere of Thomas Adès’ Three
Studies from Couperin.
10) Stravinsky,
Haydn & Ravel - Mar. 14 & 15, 2015
Associate conductor
of The Philadelphia Orchestra Cristian
Macelaru returns to conduct TFO in a program featuring Stravinsky’s Petrushka (1947) together with Ravel’s La Valse and the TFO premiere of Haydn’s Symphony No. 98.
11) Mahler’s
Symphony No. 4 – Mar. 20, 21 & 22, 2015
Associate conductor
of The Philadelphia Orchestra Cristian
Macelaru conducts a second program back-to-back with TFO on the upcoming
season, which opens with Richard Strauss’ Serenade
for Winds and is followed by Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of
1915 featuring the TFO debut of young soprano Talise Trevigne. The concert
concludes with one of Mahler’s most lyrical works, Symphony No. 4.
12) Scheherazade –
Apr. 17, 18 & 19, 2015
Music director of the
Memphis Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Sinfonietta, Mei-Ann Chen will conduct TFO with featured soloist Jeremy Denk in his TFO debut performing
Bartok’s Piano
Concerto No. 3. The
program also includes Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon’s blue cathedral and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade.
13) The Planets - May 1, 2 & 3, 2015
Music director of the New
West Symphony Orchestra in Los Angeles and the associate conductor of the
Boston Symphony Orchestra, Marcelo
Lehninger returns to conduct TFO and the women’s chorus of The Master
Chorale of Tampa Bay in Holst’s The
Planets. The concert opens with Barber’s The School for Scandal
Overture and also features TFO principal bassoon Anthony Georgeson in Mozart’s Bassoon
Concerto.
14) Beethoven and
Sibelius – May 29 & 30, 2015
Music director of the
Rhode Island Philharmonic, Larry Rachleff brings the 2014/2015 season to a close conducting TFO in a program
of Rossini’s Overture to Semiramide, Beethoven’s
Symphony No. 8 and Sibelius’
monumental Symphony No. 5.

All of the Tampa
Bay Times Masterworks concerts offer pre-concert conversations in each hall
beginning one hour before curtain time. To provide audience members with a more
enjoyable concert experience, guest conductors and artists discuss the
personalities and circumstances behind the music as well as share fun and
informative insights and anecdotes related to each program.
Tickets: Continued Dedication to Accessibility
At the onset of the
2011/2012 season, TFO announced a bold, mission-based accessibility initiative
and lowered ticket prices for all Masterworks and Pops series concerts,
simplified series packaging and diversified programming so that more people in
Tampa Bay might enjoy live symphonic music.
Announcing a price freeze, the orchestra will continue to offer the same
affordable prices this season.
Individual concert tickets for all Masterworks and Pops Series remain at
$15, $30 and $45 per ticket. Other
concert series ticket prices will also remain the same: Coffee Series concerts are priced from $24 to
$42 each, and Rock Series concerts are priced at $35, $55 and $75 each. Venue facility fees apply to all purchases. Some restrictions apply.
Six Masterworks subscription
packages are offered in packages of 14, 10, 7 and 5 pre-selected concerts. These fixed package subscriptions feature a
variety of benefits including premium seating, free flexible ticket exchange privileges
and other added-value amenities.
TFO also offers a “Compose
Your Own” Series whereby subscribers can create customized packages by mixing
and matching any combination of Masterworks and Pops concerts for just $25 per
ticket. A minimum of three concerts is
required and good seats are made available on a first-come, first-served
basis. Fixed package benefits do not apply.
