Bill's Biograpy of famous German-Americans:
Henry John Heinz
Bill's Biograpy of famous German-Americans:
Henry John Heinz
This information was found in Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Henry John Heinz (1844 –1919) was an American businessman who founded the H. J. Heinz Company based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was born there as the son of German immigrants who came to the United States in the early 1840s , his father came from Kallstadt in Bavaria, at age 19, his mother at age 21. The daughter of a Lutheran minister and John Heinz, also Lutheran, married in Pittsburgh in1843.
(Through his father's family, Henry Heinz was second cousin to Frederick Trump, who emigrated to the United States from the same town, Kallstadt, Germany in 1885. Trump was the immigrant ancestor and paternal grandfather of Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States.)
H. J. Heinz Company
Henry John Heinz began packing foodstuffs on a small scale at Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1869. After his first company that marketed packaged horseradish did not succeed, Heinz founded F and J Heinz with his brother and his cousin. One of this company's first products was tomato ketchup.
The company continued to grow, and in 1888 Heinz bought out his partners and reorganized as the H. J. Heinz Company. The company's slogan, "57 varieties,"was introduced by Heinz in 1896. By then the company was selling more than 60 different products.
H. J. Heinz Company was incorporated in 1905, and Heinz remained its first president for the rest of his life.
Under his leadership the company was noted for its fair treatment of workers and for pioneering safe and sanitary food preparation.
He provided his employees with free medical care; recreation facilities such as gyms, swimming pools, and gardens; and education opportunities such as libraries, free concerts, and lectures.
At the time of Heinz's death in Pittsburgh at the age of 74, the H. J. Heinz Company owned more than 20 food-processing plants, seed farms, and container factories.
First introduced in 1876, Heinz Tomato Ketchup remains the best selling brand of ketchup. From 1906 it was produced without preservatives. In 1907, Heinz started producing 13 million bottles of ketchup per year, exporting ketchup all over the world.
