In this week's show Susanne Nielsen visits the german State of Saxony, and speaks with Hans Joerg Schurz, who loves to climb. During many years of climbing steep mountains like those of sandstone often featured in the American Soutwest, the Grand Canyon, he enjoyed climbing these tall skinny formations in the German East. Since travel became easier he also scaled such mountains in the South seas.

Dress code varies, from festive to folklore or casual.

The Cultural Center for German Language invites you to its 2013 programs.

The Cultural Center offers monthly programs to its members, organizes events and group excursions to cultural venues such as museums, theaters with exhibitions, opera, music often paired with optional visits to European restaurants all in the spirit of sharing German, and German speaking heritage in a variety of cultural settings.

Shared events with other German-American organizations like the German American Society Pinellas, the German American Social Club of New Port Richey, the German American Society of Florida and the Richard Wagner Society and events from opera, classical concerts to the celebration of German folk culture and traditions during Mayfests, German Heritage fests and Oktoberfests may be found in the Cultural Center’s program.

Ein Interview mit Hans Joerg Schurz:
Klettern in Sachsen und in der Suedsee

Nach Sachsen geht es jetzt mit Hans Jeorg schurz als gespraechspartner, der Berge nicht versetzt, sondern erklettert. Ich kannte die Bezeichnung Sachsensteiger, aber er wehrt sich strickt dagegen, nein es handele sich um Klettern, nicht um Steigen.
Gut, und die schoenen Sandsteingebilde in Sachsen hat er Zeit seines Lebens mit seinen Freunden be- und erklettert und dann zog es ihn nach der Wende in die Suedsee. Obwohl der Grand Canyon ebenso rote Sandsteine hat, sind die bizarren Steine der Suedsee fuer den Sachsen und seine Freunde zum erklaerten Lieblingsziel geworden. Hoeren Sie was er von den Menschen und seinen Abendteuern erzaehlt.

- In 1961, the building of the concrete Berlin wall is started.

- Also in 1961, American Vice President Lyndon Johnson visits Bonn and Berlin. He reaffirms America's commitment to the defense of West Berlin.
