This week we are off to the opera! St. Pete Opera company is bringing us beautiful costumes and voices. And the opera , sung in French has brought some old friends and new voices to the bay area. Bryan Wehrle, Canadian with a a bass to be remembered is the Duke of Verona, and Jennifer Panara is a mischievous page, this pants role suits her well and the Mezzo soprano  is perfect for the role. Bass Brian Wehrle began seine Karriere frueh als Solist in zahlreichen Auffuehrungen in seiner Heimatstadt Winnipeg, im Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir and im Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. Absolvent der McGill Universitaet unter der Betreuung von Sanford Sylvan, hat Brian eine international Karriere in Kanada und den USA in zahlreichen Rollen aufbauen koennen. Dazu gehoeren Rollen in Zauberfloete, Don Giovanni, und La Traviata. Sein Debut bei der St. Petersburg Opera hat er in Ariadne auf Naxos gegeben und ist jetzt als der Herzog in Gounods Romeo und Juliet zu erleben.    

Jennifer Panara, Mezzo-Sopran, ist besonders fuer ihre klare Aussprache deutscher Rollen wie besonders Wagners Wesendonck-Lieder mit dem Philharmonischen Chor Bonn gelobt worden. Auch im Fruehjahr 2011 war sie wieder in Bonn als Solistin in Mahlers 4. Synfonie zu hoeren.

Nun ist sie wieder in der Rolle des Pagen in Romeo und Juliet zu hoeren, diesmal auf Franzoesisch und mit viel schauspielerischen Talent, in der Auffuehrung der St. Petersburg Opera.

Zunaechst moechte ich allen Deutschen unter unseren Hoerern einen besinnlichen deutschen nationalfeiertag wuenschen, der ja am 3.Oktober feierlich begangen wurde und Tag der Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands ist. Unseren Deutsch-Amerikanern wuenschen wir heute, den 6.Oktober einen schoenen German-American Day, dieser von Praesident Romald Reagan ( Redaktion: nicht Bill Clinton) 1987 wiederbelebte Tag erinnert an die zahlreichen Beitraege Deutscher und Deutschstaemmiger zur Geschichte und Errungenschaften der USA.  Ein Interview mit dem neuen GeneralKonsul der Bundesrepublik in Miami bringen wir in unserer naechsten Sendung, da wir heute bereits zwei lange Interviews und viele Ansagen zu den Florida oktoberfesten haben, die unsere Stunde ausfuellen. Freuen Sie sich also auf Oper, die hier in Florida live und demnaechst auch im Kino mit allerdings anderen Darstellern kommt. Wir unterhalten uns heute mit Brian Wehrle und Jennifer Panera.

Der German-American Day ist ein Feiertag in den Vereinigten Staaten, der jährlich am 6. Oktober begangen wird. Der Feiertag soll an das deutsche Erbe erinnern und nimmt Bezug auf den 6. Oktober 1683, als 13 deutsche Familien, die aus Krefeld in die Nähe von Philadelphia übersiedelten, dort Germantown gründeten. Hierbei handelte es sich um die erste deutsche Siedlung in den Dreizehn Kolonien. Erstmals gefeiert wurde dieser Tag im 19. Jahrhundert, aber bedingt durch den Ersten Weltkrieg und die während dieser Zeit vorherrschende anti-deutsche Stimmung in den Vereinigten Staaten starb diese Tradition aus. Erst 1983 wurde sie wiederbelebt, als der damalige Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten, Ronald Reagan, den 6. Oktober zum German-American Day ausrief, um den 300. Jahrestag der Immigration von Deutschen und ihrer Kultur in die Vereinigten Staaten zu feiern und zu ehren. Am 6. August 1987 bewilligte der Kongress der Vereinigten Staaten eine Resolution, die den 6. Oktober 1987 zum German-American Day erklärte. Mit der Unterzeichnung durch Präsident Reagan am 18. August wurde der Tag gesetzlich verankert. Die offizielle Verkündigung fand am 2. Oktober 1987 im Rahmen einer offiziellen Zeremonie im White House Rose Garden statt, bei der Präsident Reagan die Amerikaner dazu aufrief, den Tag mit adäquaten Zeremonien und Aktivitäten zu begehen. Kino: Wer meint der deutsch-Spanische Schauspieler Daniel Bruehl sei noch kein Begriff im Ausland, irrt sich sehr. Gerade dieses Jahr ist er sehr viel auf der internationalen Leinwand zu sehen. In dem Film “Rush” spielt er Niki Lauda, mit oesterreichischem Akzent, in The Fifth Dimension ist er Albert Berg, der Anhaenger und Moechtegernpartner von Wikileaks Erfinder Julian Assange. Dann wieder kommt das von der Mutter gelernte Spanisch Bruehl in “7 Tage in Havanna” zugute, wo er einen passionierten Spanischen Regisseur zu Besuch in Kuba mimt. “Ein hervorragender Schauspieler”, sagen beeindruckt auch die Amerikaner. Einen deutschen Akzent hat er und so werden die Rollen sicherlich auf seine Herkunft zielen. Moritz Bleibtreu spielt ebenfalls im Wikileaks film mit, ein hervorragender Film, der die Zusammenhaenge etwas klarer macht, und auch in “Rush” wird eine im Ausland und fuer nicht Formel 1 fans unbekannte Geschichte erzaehlt. Da kommt Alexandra Maria Lara auch international zum erstnmal ins Blickfeld.

Mit “Captain Phillips” wird eher ein psychologisches Geiseldrama erzaehlt, obwohl man vielleicht einen Actionfilm erwartet. Die Musik hat Hans Zimmer hervorragend mit viel afrikanischen Rythmen und grossen Trommeln gestaltet, die uns die Dramatik schon lange vor dem Hoehepunkt fuehlen laesst. Tom Hanks spielt wie immer in Hoechstform, dieser Film ist sehenswert! Der Kinoherbst ist mit vielen Oscarwuerdigen Filmen damit bereits eingelaeutet. Dazu gehoert auch die leistung Forrest Whittakers als Butler im Weissen Haus, der durch sein Leben die CivilRightsbewegung sichtbar macht, die parallel zu seinem immer gleichzubeleibendem Butlerdasein ablaeuft und ihn letztlich einholt.

Mit diesen Empfehlungen verbleiben wir diese Woche und machen die Freunde des Florida Orchesters in West Florida auf beethovens Neunte aufmerksam, mit der die neue Saison am 11.Oktober,also kommenden Freitag beginnt. Die Sarasota Opernsaison beginnt einen Monat spaeter, Anfang November, aber Konzerte der Solisten gibt es bereits davor.

Runner,Runner erzaehlt die Geschichte der Suche nach dem scnellen Geld, dafuer muss unser Held sich tief in die Machenschaften seines vermeintlichen Idols im Geschaeft verstricken, und dann gibt es bekanntlich kein Zurueck mehr. Justin Timberlake wie immer nicht nur der grosse Saenger sondern zunehmend ein Superschauspieler. Hingehen, schon seinetwegen.

October 18: Classical Mystery Tour – Rock Series

After their sold-out performances with The Florida Orchestra, Classical Mystery Tour returns for a night of 30 Beatles hits, including Penny Lane, Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby, Hey Jude, Strawberry Fields Forever, I Saw Her Standing There and many more – all in a show hailed for their spot-on mannerisms, witty stage banter, note-perfect arrangements, Fab Four vocal harmonies and costume changes reflecting The Beatles break-through periods of creativity. October 19 and 20: Pops in the Park

Pack a picnic dinner and listen to a lively mix of familiar classics and popular favorites under the stars at these free concerts. Concertgoers are invited to bring canned food donations for Tampa Bay Harvest for their food bank services in the Tampa Bay area.

October 24: From Russia With Love – Coffee Concert Series

Stuart Malina conducts this morning Coffee Concert featuring Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Glinka’s Russlan and Ludmilla Overture and Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor, along with the Scherzo movement from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4.  Enjoy complimentary coffee and doughnuts as well as a pre-concert conversation one hour before the concert.

October 25, 26 and 27: Cirque de la Symphonie – Raymond James Pops Series

Back by popular demand, Cirque de la Symphonie returns with a breathtaking variety of seemingly impossible acts by some of the world’s premiere cirque artists. Among the performers featured are aerial flyers, acrobats, contortionists, dancers, jugglers, balancers and strongmen. These are some of the most accomplished veterans of Cirque du Soleil and artists from other exceptional cirque programs of international stature. The artists include world-record holders, gold-medal winners of international competitions, and some of the most original talent seen anywhere. The Florida Orchestra accompanies these extraordinary performers in a broad selection of symphonic favorites, ranging from movie themes by John Williams to symphonic favorites by Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Bernstein, Bizet and others.  Conductor is Jeff Tyzik.
