Bravo Beethoven! Ein Interview mit Maestro Marcelo Lehninger
In today’s show Susanne Nielsen meets Maestro Marcelo Lehninger again who last year conducted the
Florida orchestra and this year brings an all-Beethoven concert to audiences in
Tampa Bay. The Maestro is a citizen of both his home country Brazil and of
Germany, as his father is from Germany, but after the move to Brazil did not
bring Marcelo up with any of his native language German. So the interview was
conducted in English about the a very German composer, Ludwig van Beethoven.
The composer was born in Bonn, Germany, but spent much of his life
composing in Vienna, Austria, where he remained.
Liebe Freunde des Kulturspiegels, heute habe ich die freude, wieder einmal mit Maestro Marcelo Lehninger zu sprechen, der schon letztes Jahr das Florida Orchester dirigiert hat. Dieses Wochenende ist es ein Beethovenkonzert in drei Teilen, darunter Beethovens Egmont Overtuere, das Klavierkonzert Nr.3, mit dem Iren John O'Connor hervorragend als Solist besetzt, und zum Abschluss Beethovens "Pastorale". Maestro Lehninger, liebenswuerdig wie ehedem gab uns ein Interview, das Sie im Hauptteil unserer Sendung hoeren. Da er einen deutschen Vater ( den Violinisten Erich Lehninger) hat, jedoch, wie er uns bereits letztes Jahr erzaehlte, unter dem Klavier seiner Mutter, einer brazilianischen Pianistin , grosswurde, hat er leider seine Vatersprache nicht gelernt, sondern das Portugiesisch seiner Heimat Rio, wo Braziliens schoenste Straende sind.

Maestro Lehninger im Interview mit Susanne Nielsen
Brazilian-born Marcelo Lehninger is recognized as one of the most gifted conductors of his
generation. Appointed Music Director of the New West Symphony Orchestra in Los
Angeles, his growing reputation as a dynamic conductor inspires musicians and
audiences of all ages worldwide.
After three
successful seasons as Boston Symphony Orchestra's Assistant Conductor, Mr.
Lehninger renewed his contract for two more seasons as the Orchestra's new
Associate Conductor.
Mr. Lehninger
made his BSO debut in 2010 with the violinist Pinchas Zukerman as soloist and
in 2011 he stepped in for Maestro Levine on a very short notice to conduct the
world premiere of Harrison Birtwistle's Violin Concerto and Bartok’s 2nd Violin
Concerto with Christian Testzlaff as soloist. In 2012 Mr. Lehninger filled in
at short notice for conductor Andris Nelsons, conducting a program that
included the American premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage's Trumpet Concerto “From
the Wreckage” with Håkan Hardenberger as soloist as well as Strauss’ Thus Spake
Zarathustra. He also successfully conducted a program, without any rehearsals,
that included Stravinsky’s Piano and Winds Concerto with pianist Peter Serkin
and Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony.
Mr. Lehninger
made a highly praised debut at Carnegie
Hall with the BSO in 2011. Critic Anthony Tommasini wrote in the New York
Times: "He was terrific, conducting all three works with impressive
technique, musical insight and youthful energy". Maestro Lehninger's other
BSO appearances include his Tanglewood debut in the summer of 2012 with pianist
Nelson Freire and a subscription week in the 2012/13 season with violinist
Joshua Bell.
As a guest
conductor in the United States, he has led the Boston, Houston, National (Washington,
DC), New West, Hartford, Fairfax and Jacksonville symphony orchestras, as well
as the Florida Orchestra, Boston Symphony Chamber Players, Tanglewood Music
Center Orchestra, New England Conservatory Philharmonia and Bard College
Conservatory Orchestra. In Canada, Mr. Lehninger made his debut in 2011
conducting the Hamilton Philharmonic, and was invited to conduct the orchestra
again in 2012. In April 2013 Mr.
Lehninger recorded the work of composer Christopher Culpo for Radio France in
Paris, conducting the Orchestre National de France.
Acclaimed by
the Washington Post as "an alert, dynamic figure", he served as cover
conductor for the National Symphony Orchestra's subscription concerts at the
Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and associate conductor of the Minas Gerais
Philharmonic Orchestra, in Brazil.
An alumnus of
the National Conducting Institute, he made a successful debut with the National
Symphony Orchestra in 2007 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and was
invited to conduct the NSO again in the summer of 2008.
Mr. Lehninger
was music advisor of the Youth Orchestra of the Americas for the 2007-08
season. Placido Domingo serves as artistic advisor for the ensemble, which is
composed of 120 talented musicians from more than twenty countries throughout
the Americas. In summer of 2008, Maestro Lehninger toured with the YOA and
pianist Nelson Freire in South America, conducting concerts in Argentina,Brazil
and Uruguay.
Since winning
the First Eleazar de Carvalho National Conducting Competition in Rio de Janeiro
in 2001, he has led all of the top orchestras in Brazil as well as regular
guest conducting in Argentina.
Chosen by Kurt Masur, in 2008, Mr. Lehninger was
awarded the First Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Scholarship sponsored by the American
Friends of the Mendelssohn Foundation. He was Maestro Masur’s assistant with
the Orchestre National de France (during
their residency at the Musikverein in Vienna), the Gewandhaus Orchestra in
Leipzig and the New York Philharmonic. In 2011 he participated in the Bruno
Walter National Conductor Preview, organized by the League of American
Orchestras, conducting the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.
Upcoming
appearances include concerts with the Baltimore, Boston, Chautauqua, Florida,
Indianapolis, Louisville, New West, Omaha and Seattle symphony orchestras, as
well as the São Paulo Symphony and Minas Gerais Philharmonic orchestras in
Brazil; Toronto Symphony Orchestra in Canada; Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra
in Venezuela and the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester at the Philharmonie in
Berlin, Germany.
Before
dedicating his career to conducting, Mr. Lehninger studied violin and piano. He
holds a Master's degree from the Conductors Institute at New York's Bard
College, where he studied conducting under Harold Farberman and composition
with Laurence Wallach. His mentors also include Kurt Masur, Leonard Slatkin and
Roberto Tibiriçá.
A dual
citizen of Brazil and Germany,
Marcelo Goulart Lehninger is the son of pianist Sônia Goulart and violinist
Erich Lehninger. He lives with his wife Laura and daughter Sofia in Boston and
Los Angeles.

"The Hunger Games" ist erklaerter Publikumsliebling und dessen Stars werden von Boesewicht Donald Sutherland bis zu Phillip Seymour Hoffmann, der den Spielleiter mit dem noetigen undurchsichtigen Gesicht spielt, und unseren jungen Helden Peeta und seiner starken Partnerin, Katness, in einer Welt der Rebellion die Weltgeschichte vor unseren Weltkriegen des 20. Jahrhunderts grausam und ins futuristische versetzt , vor Augen fuehrt.
Nur der Film Das Schlangenei versetzt uns in aehnliche Angst, hier ist die auf der grossen Leinwand weit interessanter als in Teil 1 dieser Buch und nun Filmserie realisiert.
Fuer Disneyfans, ein absolut schoener neuer Film, Frozen, wo es im kalten Norwegen mit einer schoenen Prinzessin, einem guten und boesen Helden, die um ihre Hand und die eigene Macht kaempfen und ein goldiges Renntier, das sicherlich unter jedem Weihnachtsbaum sitzen wird, geht, ist jetzt Hochsaison. Viel viel Spass!
Wolf of Wallstreet, ein dreistuendiges Verkaufsmaratonspiel, in dem Leonardo Da Caprio einen gekonnten Verkaeufer spielt, der sich auf die hoechsten Hoehen und immer auch an den Rand der Wirklichkeit und des Ruins wagt, aber, so dieser Wallstreet Mann, wer nicht ueberaus Hochstapelt, der kann auch nie gewinnen. Wer aber gewinnt, tut dies ohne Ruecksicht auf Verluste.
"American Husstle" - was haben wir geglaubt? Viel Haar, tiefe Ausschnitte und schon kann man aber auch alle ueberzeugen? Amerikanische Kollegen haben selten so gelacht? Na bitte, wer kann bereits ueber diese Zeiten in Nostalgie und noch dazu in Gelaechter ausbrechen? Wir jedenfalls nicht.
Kaum hat das neue Jahr begonnen , steht auch schon Horror auf dem Programm, paranormal wird es , aber nur auf der Leinwand und das mit nicht sehr vielen Dollars produziert aber immerhin genug um uns mal wieder aufzuscheuchen.
Im Land des Hobbit, schon wieder eine Serie, an deren Ende man noch lange nicht Tolkiens Opus auch nur halb geschafft hat, ist man mit den altbekannten Charakteren im Wald Neuseelands, na bitte.

Wer lachen will muss sich Hound of the baskervilles ansehen, im Shimberg Playhouse im Straz Center, von Jobsite Theater auf die Buehne gebracht.

Nein, ganz falsch! Denn schon eilt ein weiterer Herr mit Regenmantel herein, und stoppt alles, Halt ruft er , hier geht es um Grauen, wir wollen Sie warnen. Es koennte heftig werden, Sie moegen geschockt sein, das ist nichts fuer zarte Gemueter. Und wir sagen kein Wort wenn gerade SIE jetzt den Saal verlassen moechten – jetzt waere ein guter Zeitpunkt. Wirklich!
Diese Einfuehrung in Sir Arthur Conan Doyles Klassiker, the Hound of Baskerville, von Regisseur und Theaterleiter David Jenkens inszeniert, der auch diesen von Dr. Watson dem Publikum so sorgsam ueberbrachten Hinweis antraegt, bringt alles bereits auf den Punkt!
Es wird komisch, es wird von wenigen Schauspielern gespielt, und es gibt viel zu lachen, den die Story ist ja eine laengst bekannte, jetzt kommt es auf das “Wie” an.
Jenkins selbst und zwei weitere Schauspielkollegen bringen uns , sogar mit einer kleinen Encore Wiederholung nach der Pause,ganz nach dem Vorbild der endlosen Fernseh-Serien die notwendige Einfuehrung fuer die , die etwas verpasst haben koennten. Sherlock Holmes und noch viele andere, wie auch eine sehr komisch dargebrachte Frauenrolle werden von Giles Davies, und Sir Henry Baskerville und viele andere werden von Shawn Paonessa von der Eingangsszene bis zum herrlichen Ende wunderbar gespielt . Durch all die schnellen Verwandlungen fuer die Vielfalt der Rollen kommt es zu einem staendigen Verwechslungsspiel, die drei Herren muessen ihrem Publikum durch geschickt wechselnde Kostuemteile , als auch durch Mimik und verschiedene Stimmen die verschiedenen Handlungsfiguren nahebringen. Hierbei kommt David Jenkins besonders seine sein Pantomime Training zugute.Fuer die Regie , fuer Kostume und die wenigen sehr guten wandlungsfaehigen Buehnenbildteile zeichnet Katrina Stevenson verantwortlich.
So wird aus dem Klassiker ein amuesantes Drama, das ganz neu mit dem Stoff umgeht und auch Sie noch in dieses Theater locken sollte.

Hailed for his “exquisite playing” by The New York Times, Irish pianist John O’Conor is the soloist in the powerfully dramatic Piano Concerto No. 3 in this all-Beethoven concert that opens with the Egmont Overture and concludes with the buoyant and charming Symphony No. 6, “Pastorale.” There will be a pre-concert conversation one hour prior to curtain. Guest Conductor is Marcelo Lehninger.

The Florida Orchestra Announces Limited On-Stage Seating at Select Masterworks Concerts Kicking Off at Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 on Nov. 8, 9 & 10
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – October 22, 2013 – The Florida Orchestra (TFO) has announced that it will offer limited on-stage seating at ten of this season’s Tampa Bay Times Masterworks concerts starting with Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 on November 8, 9 and 10 in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater. Priced at $75 for on-stage seating, the number of concertgoers that can be accommodated at each performance ranges from three to ten, depending on the music being presented, as each piece requires different numbers of musicians and specific orchestra configurations on stage.
TFO Chairman Tom Farquhar said, “We are continually exploring ways to reach out to the community, make the orchestra more accessible and enhance that experience for concertgoers. We hope this new initiative will provide an opportunity for more adventuresome music lovers to see and hear a concert from our musicians’ unique perspective. The on-stage seating option will also give people a glimpse into the backstage area of what goes on just prior to a concert as well as some of the preparations musicians are making just before going on stage to perform.”

The ticket prices for reserved seats in the halls for Masterworks are $15, $30 and $45. The on-stage seating price is $75 for those who would like to be alongside the musicians, enjoy a head-on view of the conductor leading the orchestra and get a musician’s view of the concert hall.
