 Franz Lehar's Merry Widow is coming to audiences in English, but the story is decidedly Viennese! Austrian composer Lehar wrote some of the most beautiful operetta areas, popular that you simply cannot forget. The Spanish Lyric Theatre under the direction of Rene Gonzales offers performances in the tradition of the many clubs in Ybor City, Tampa's multicultural tobacco city. Join them as the Merry Widow comes to town two performances only, Saturday evening May 10th at 8 pm and Sunday May 11th and Mothers Day at 2 pm for a Sunday matinee at the HCC performing Arts Hall. Susanne has a conversation with the company's director Rene Gonzales on all things Lehar and Merry Widow.

Die Geschichte ist eine amuesante, und altbekannte, ein huebsches Maedchen kann den grafen nicht heiraten, weil sie nicht von Adel ist. Dann aber begegnet man sich wieder und nun ist sie eine reiche Witwe und der graf ist noch immer verliebt, muss sich aber hueten, dass er nicht in die Reihe der nur nach ihrem geld trachtenden Herren eingereiht wird. Die lustige Witwe ist eine Operette in drei Akten von Franz Lehár. Das Libretto stammt von Victor Léon und Leo Stein nach Henri Meilhacs Lustspiel L’attaché d'ambassade von 1861. Die Uraufführung fand am 30. Dezember 1905 am Theater an der Wien in Wien statt. Die Sänger der Uraufführung waren Mizzi Günther und Louis Treumann. Die Spieldauer der Operette beträgt zweidreiviertel Stunden, Ort der Handlung ist Paris.
Die lustige Witwe ist Lehárs erfolgreichste und bekannteste Operette. Zwischen 1905 und 1948, dem Todesjahr des Komponisten, wurde sie weltweit über 300.000 Mal aufgeführt. Daneben wurde sie mehrfach verfilmt.

The story:
Handlung
Graf Danilo war es aus familiären hierarchischen Gründen nicht erlaubt, Hanna, ein Mädel vom Land, zu heiraten. Während er nach diesem Heiratsverbot seine Sorgen bei den Grisetten zu vergessen sucht, gelingt es Hanna, den reichen Bankier Glawari zu ehelichen, der noch in der Hochzeitsnacht stirbt. Auf dem Ball der pontevedrinischen Botschaft in Paris treffen beide wieder aufeinander. Jetzt ist Hanna eine reiche Witwe, und jeder Mann will sie unbedingt heiraten – aber nicht wegen ihrer Schönheit und Intelligenz, sondern allein wegen ihres Geldes. Auch Danilos Liebe zu Hanna entflammt erneut, er traut sich aber nicht, ihr zu gestehen, dass er sie liebt – aus Angst, man würde ihm ebenfalls vorwerfen, nur an ihrem Geld interessiert zu sein. Erst als Hanna durch einen Trick vorgibt, ohne Geld zu sein, können sich beide in die Arme fallen.
Die Operette besticht durch die für die Zeit der Entstehung völlig neue und erotisierende Instrumentierung wie durch ein neues Sujet: Eine selbstbewusste und starke Frau setzt sich in der Männerwelt durch. Bei der Handlung hält Hanna das Heft in der Hand. Erotische und politische Anspielungen der Zeit machen die Operette übernational interessant.

Verfilmungen 

Allerlei zum Thema

  • 1907 wurde „Mitislaw der Moderne“ (Text: Fritz Grünbaum und Robert Bodanzky; Musik: Franz Lehár) im Kabarett „Hölle“ uraufgeführt. „Mitislaw der Moderne“ ist eine Art Remake oder eine Parodie der Lustigen Witwe, basierend auf dem Grisettenakt. Erschienen im Glockenverlag. Die Handlung dreht sich um Prinz Mitislaw, der in dem Balkanstaat Benzinien eine erotische Diktatur errichtet.
  • „Die lustige Witwe“ war Adolf Hitlers Lieblingsoperette. Die jüdischen Librettisten Léon und Stein blieben bei Aufführungen in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus unerwähnt. Josef Greiner behauptete in seinem Buch Das Ende des Hitler-Mythos 1947, Hitler habe sich während seines Wiener Aufenthalts beim Theater an der Wien als Sänger mit einem Lied aus der Lustigen Witwe beworben und sei von DirektorWilhelm Karczag nur deshalb abgelehnt worden, weil er keinen Frack trug. Wie andere wenig glaubwürdige Erzählungen Greiners wurde auch dieser Bericht wiederholt aufgegriffen.
  • Das Maxim-Lied wird mit einigen Variationen der Titelzeile präsentiert: „Da geh ich zu Maxim“, da geh' ich zum Maxim oder „Da geh' ich ins Maxim“, was auf den populären Einspielungen häufig ist (BeispielRené Kollo). Bei Heesters heißt es auch „Heut geh ich ins Maxim“, vereinzelt findet man auch „Dann geh' ich ins Maxim.“
  • Dmitri Schostakowitsch zitiert das Lied „Da geh' ich ins Maxim“ im ersten Satz seiner 7. Symphonie („Leningrader“). Béla Bartók zitiert seinerseits Schostakowitschs Verwendung dieser Melodie in seinemKonzert für Orchester, IV. Satz Intermezzo interrotto, Allegro.
  • Am 8. Dezember 2009 trug Johannes Heesters im Alter von 106 Jahren bei einem Konzert des Wiener Robert-Stolz-Clubs „Da geh ich ins Maxim“ vor.
  • „Lippen schweigen, 's flüstern Geigen“ fungiert als Hauptthema in Alfred Hitchcocks Film „Im Schatten des Zweifels“ („Shadow of a Doubt“, 1943), wird dort jedoch als „Merry Widow Waltz“ („Lustige-Witwe-Walzer“) bezeichnet.
  • 1970 inszenierte Franz Marischka in der Berliner Deutschlandhalle die Show Die lustige Witwe auf dem Eis mit Marika Kilius, Hans-Jürgen Bäumler und Manfred Schnelldorfer.
  • Der Kölner Männer-Gesang-Verein persiflierte das Thema in seinem Divertissementchen 2011 
  • unter demTitel Die Kölsche Witwe.

-  In 1686, we see the birth of Daniel Fahrenheit in Danzig, Germany.  He invented the Fahrenheit temperature scale and was the inventor of the alcohol and mercury thermometers.

-  In 1854, we see the birth of Louis Alexander in Graz, Austria.  He was a British Admiral of the Fleet and worked with Churchill to mobilize the British fleet going into WWI.  But due to his German origins, he was forced to resign his First Sea Lord position in 1914.  His grandson, Prince Philip, would someday marry Queen Elizabeth II.

-  In 1910, we see the death of Robert Koch.  He was a bacteriologist who discovered the causes of anthrax, tuberculosis and cholera.  For his work in tuberculosis, he received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1905.

-  In 1923, we see the birth of Henry Kissinger in Furth, Germany.

-  In 1941, the German battleship Bismarck is sunk by British naval forces.

-  In 1952, East Germany cuts phone service to West Berlin.  West Berliner's are no longer allowed into East Germany.

-  And in 1988, we see the death of Ernst Ruska in West Berlin.  He won the Nobel prize for Physics for his invention of the electron microscope.

Sarasota Opera expands the
"HD at the Opera House" Series

Announces complete line-up and dates for remaining HD series

Sarasota, FL - Sarasota Opera is pleased to announce the expansion of its new broadcast and film series called "HD at the Opera House".  This new series is  allowing Sarasota Opera to expand its programming from the fall and winter season to year-around. In addition to opera, the series will include ballet and theater from some of the world's most famous venues. All showings will occur in the William E. Schmidt Opera Theatre at the Sarasota Opera House.     

"Sarasota Opera audiences are often asking for more programming,” according to Executive Director Richard Russell. "We are happy to expand our season by providing content from around the world."                  
 HD at the Opera House
Sarasota Opera launched its new series on April 14th with Mozart's Don Giovanni and will continue with screenings of opera, ballet, and theater through October 2014.  
Each presentation will be preceded by a 15 minute welcome and pre-show discussion.

Hailed as “a superior musician” by The New York Times, Cuban-American guitarist Manuel Barrueco performs Roberto Sierra’s Concierto Barroco with its lively mix of baroque and tropical musical elements...all in a night with Stravinsky’s Jeu de Cartes (A Game of Cards) and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, Pathétique. Guest Conductor is Cristian Macelaru. There will be a Pre-concert Conversation one hour prior to curtain.

May 22: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 – Coffee Concert Series
English guest conductor Michael Francis will lead the orchestra in a program featuring Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, along with Steven Stucky’s Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary (after Purcell) and Andrzej Panufnik’s Sinfonia Sacra. In addition to complimentary coffee and doughnuts, enjoy the Pre-Concert Conversation one hour before curtain time, as well as lively commentary about the music during the concerts. Guest Conductor is Michael Francis.

May 23, 24 and 25: A Stars & Stripes Hit Parade – Raymond James Pops Series
It’s a Memorial Day weekend of overtures, marches and Americana favorites, including an Armed Forces Salute, Washington Post March, Colonel Bogey March, Yankee Doodle, Copland’s Hoedown and music by John Williams and more. Guest Conductor is Bob Bernhardt.

May 30 and 31: Ravel’s Daphnis Et Chloe – Tampa Bay Times Masterworks Series
The evening opens with Haydn’s buoyant Symphony No. 60, “Il Distrato.”  This is followed by Toru Takemitsu’s dreamy soundscape Toward the Sea II, which is an apt prelude to Ravel’s dazzlingly lush symphonic palette of orchestral colors in the full ballet score of Daphnis et Chloé, which features The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay. Guest Conductor is Joshua Weilerstein. Beginning one hour before the performance, during our pre-concert conversation, there will be a special performance by The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay under the direction of Dr. James K. Bass.

The Florida Orchestra Announces Limited On-Stage Seating at Select Masterworks Concerts Kicking Off at Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 on Nov. 8, 9 & 10

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – October 22, 2013 – The Florida Orchestra (TFO) has announced that it will offer limited on-stage seating at ten of this season’s Tampa Bay Times Masterworks concerts starting with Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 on November 8, 9 and 10 in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater.   Priced at $75 for on-stage seating, the number of concertgoers that can be accommodated at each performance ranges from three to ten, depending on the music being presented, as each piece requires different numbers of musicians and specific orchestra configurations on stage.

TFO Chairman Tom Farquhar said, “We are continually exploring ways to reach out to the community, make the orchestra more accessible and enhance that experience for concertgoers.  We hope this new initiative will provide an opportunity for more adventuresome music lovers to see and hear a concert from our musicians’ unique perspective.  The on-stage seating option will also give people a glimpse into the backstage area of what goes on just prior to a concert as well as some of the preparations musicians are making just before going on stage to perform.”

Evening Masterworks Concerts with On-Stage Seating:
  • Mar 21-23: Bartok’s Piano Concerto No. 1
  • Apr 11-13: Mozart, Diamond & Brahms
  • Apr 25-27: Tan Dun’s Water Concerto
  • May 16-18: Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique

The ticket prices for reserved seats in the halls for Masterworks are $15, $30 and $45.  The on-stage seating price is $75 for those who would like to be alongside the musicians, enjoy a head-on view of the conductor leading the orchestra and get a musician’s view of the concert hall.
