October 3rd is German Reunification Day ( Tag der Deutschen Einheit) and October 6th is German American Day. German Radio Show Host Susanne Nielsen attended both celebrations. These were held in Miami and Tampa Bay. This show brings you exerpts from Brigadier gemneral Alois Bach's speech in Honor of German American Day and Ilse Kearney's redition of the German and American national Anthems.

Sarasota OPERA
Sarasota’s 2011/12 Opera season opened with a glorious Madama Butterfly. As in its 2007 debut of this production of the Sarasota Opera the sets were ever lovely with careful details recreating the Japan of yesteryear: cherry blossoms, detailed gardens and a traditional Japanese home with wood and paper sliding walls and doors. As they are opened Butterfly looks into the distance awaiting the return of her beloved naval officer Pinkerton and his white ship.
The role of Madama Butterfly is sung (matched by her excellent acting skill ) by Soprano Asaka Tamura from Tokio, Japan. This season’s Butterfly felt ready for this major role< The spontaneous applause at every turn, especially after her fine rendition of “un bel dio” revealed that indeed this would be a triumph for the opera star.
Butterfly is supported by her faithful servant Suzuki, with warm Mezzo-Soprano voice, equally well acted by Asian-American Nina Yoshida Nelsen. Barritone Marco Nistico, a favorite in Sarasota of past seasons, warmly interpreted the American Consul Sharpless.
So wrapped up in the story was the audience that despite his excellent voice powerful tenor Rafael Davila even received some jeers and boos from the audience to comment on his character's leaving Butterfly behind. It was a thoroughly convincing story that moved the audience. Butterfly Asako Tamura received a standing ovation for her excellent performance from an audience seasoned by a lifetime of opera from Paris to Milan, New York to London.
In the Sarasota production studio and apprentice artists were well placed introducing some excellent voice performances and acting. The orchestra lead by Maestro Victor deRenzi performed with seeming ease and the costumes and makeup were a delight as always.
Sarasota Opera’s quest to stage operas close to their original versions brings us beautiful voices in traditional settings. This emotionally engaging and top quality production invites long-time supporters and new audiences alike to look forward to another e3xcellent opera season of this exciting company in Southwest Florida.
Madama Butterfly, a must-see performance runs through November 12th, to be followed by the next Opera in a season of five productions on February 11th 2012 . The season brings favorites like “Carmen”, “Lucia di Lammamoor”, Verdi’s “Otello”, and Samuel Barber’s “Vanessa”.

KINOKINOKINO
“The Way” ( Der Weg) ist ein Film, den Hape Kerkeling Fans sicherlich erkennen werden, handelt er doch von einem Vater, von Martin Sheen unter der Regie seines Sohnes Emilio Estevez ( der auch seinen verstorbenen Sohn spielt) gespielt, der den Weg durch die Pyrineen entlang der alten 900-Meilen langen Pilgerroute El Camino von Frankreich bis nach Spanien zur Walfahrtskirche Santiago de Compostella nimmt , den sein Sohn nicht mehr wander kann. Dieser eigenwillige Sohn war gleich am ersten tag seiner reise auf El Camino im Sturm umgekommen. Genug Stoff fuer einen Film, der einen spirituell bewegt und uns am Schicksal der Mitwanderer teilhaben laesst.
Deutscher Regisseur Roland Emmerich, der fuer Katastropehnfilme und visuell ueberladene Effekte bekannt ist, hat in seinem neuen Film “Anonymous” das England Elisabeth’s der ersten erstehen lassen. Die Geschichte hat eine ganze Reihe von glaubwuerdigen Anhaengern, darunter auch Sir Derek Jacoby, der in die geschichte als Erzaehler hinenfuehrt und uns am Ende auch den kurzen Abgesang bringt. Die viel besprochene Theorie, dass unter dem Diktat der Koenigin Earl of Oxford (Notting Hills kaum wiedererkennbarer Rhys Ifans) zum Regieren und fuer den angenehmen Zeitvertreib der Koenigin (Vanessa Redgrave) zwar phantasiereich agieren darf, jedoch niemals an die Oeffentlichkeit unter einer puritanischen Gesellschaftsordnung mit geschriebenen Theaterstuecken treten soll. Nachdem zunaechst Samuel Johnson seinen Namen hergeben soll, und sich in der Hoffnung Bekanntheit mir eigenen Werken zu Erlangen, weigert, faellt das Werk des Earls gesamt an Will Shakespeare, einen Schauspieler, der fuer viele kaum als ein so grosses Talent angesehen wird. Wer Kostuemfilme und Geschichten nahe an einer moeglichen Geschichtswahrheit liebt, fuer den sin des kurzweilige zwei + Stunden.
Rum Diaries gibt einen Einblick in die Gesellschaft Puerto Ricos der 60er Jahre , man sieht schoene Frauen, blauen Himmel und dicke Amischlitten, aber er zeigt auch die Kehrseite einer aufs Aeusserste manipulierten Existenz, die der dargestellte Held, von Johnny Depp gut gespielt, in seinen Anfangsjahren als Journalist, spaeter schriftsteller, navigieren muss. Der Schriftsteller schrieb diese Jahre auf und erlangte damit seinen Start in der Literaturszene.
In Time, Zukunftsabenteuer: Justin Timberlake kennt man als Saenger, in der Folge von Harry Connick Jr. und Frank Sinatra, als Schauspieler muss er sich noch bewaehren. Als Minuten zaehlender Buerger einer Welt, in der nichts anderes als Zeit mehr Wert hat, ist er auf einer gefaehrlichen faehrte, zusammen mit einer jungen Schauspielerin, die Tochter eines sehr reich an Zeit Magnate wie im goldenen Kaefig legt und einfach das Abenteuer sucht. Wir denken Daniel Craig und La Femme Nikita’s Darstellerin waeren ein interessanteres Match gewesen.
Margin Call, einer der besten Filme des Jahres, bringt eine Gruppe der aller besten Buehnen- und Filmschauspieler zusammen, die man sich wuenschen kann: Kevin Spacey, Jeromy Irons, Stanly Tucci, Demi Moore koennten mit ihren ausgezeichneten Darstellungen in dieser Wallstreetgeschichte ebenso auf der Buehne stehen. Seit Millers “Tod eines Handlungsreisenden” und so manchem Mammetstueck gab es nichts so aufregend Gutes im Kino!
Paranormal Activity 3: Ok, es ist die Zeit der geister und Hexen, von Dia del Muerte bi shin zu Halloween, da gehoert auch ein bisschen Horrorfilm dazu. Dieser ist recht spannend, wer allerdings viel Blut erwartet wird enttaeuscht.
Am 12 November soll Werner Herzog mal wieder in Florida sein. Nach dem archeologischen Filmabenteuer Cave of Forgotton dreams, hat er nun einen alten Mord in Angriff genommen. Nie langweilig, immer ein bisschen obskur, Werner Herzog, den Susanne Nielsen im Fruehjehr bereits in Sarasota traf.
Tampa Theatre in Tampas Innenstadt bringt uns einen Herbst voller interessanter internationaler Filme, von der Eleganz des Igels ( The Hedgehog) , der die Geschichte einer Concierge in Paris erzaehlt, bis zu MMMM, der Geschichte einer jungen Frau, die in eine Sekte geraet, ist Marcy Maes Geschichte weit naeher an einer Horrorstory als die vermeintlichen Filme dieser Gattung,bei denen es keinen Zweifel gibt. Mein Lieblingsfilm ist immernoch The Others mit Nicole Kidman.
Puss’n Boots, der gestiefelte Kater als Held in 3-D? Maerchenfreunde duerfen gespannt sein.
