Willkommen im Kulturspiegel.
In Muenchen klang das Oktoberfest bereits aus, nun steht ein anderer Bezugspunkt zur bayrischen Metropole im Blickfeld, Carl Orffs Werk Carmina Burana, mit dem das Florida Orchestra seine 2011/12 Saison eroeffnet. Susanne Nielsen interviewt in dieser Sendung Gast Dirigent Markus Huber zum Thema Bayern und Carl Orff. Huber spricht von der Reinheit der Gefuehle und des wirklich Volkstuemlichen in der Musik des Carl Orff, gepaart mit den Texten, die man im Kloster "Burana" fand.

It was a pleasure for German radio show’s host Susanne Nielsen to observe German guest conductor Markus Huber who is originally from Munich (as was composer Carl Orff) rehearse Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Florida Orchestra . In the interview Huber speaks of the deep connection between the work and Bavaria in all its folkloric and historic origins. About Carmina Burana:
From wikipedia: “Orff is most known for Carmina Burana (1937), a "scenic cantata". It is the first of a trilogy that also includes Catulli Carmina and Trionfo di Afrodite. Carmina Burana reflected his interest in medieval German poetry. Together the trilogy is called Trionfi, or "Triumphs". The composer described it as the celebration of the triumph of the human spirit through sexual and holistic balance. The work was based on thirteenth-century poetry found in a manuscript dubbed the Codex latinus monacensis found in the Benedictine monastery of Benediktbeuern in 1803 and written by the Goliards; this collection is also known as Carmina Burana. While "modern" in some of his compositional techniques, Orff was able to capture the spirit of the medieval period in this trilogy, with infectious rhythms and easy tonalities. The medieval poems, written in Latin and an early form of German, are often racy, but without descending into smut. "Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi", commonly known as "O Fortuna", from Carmina Burana is often used to denote primal forces.”

Mixing monk-like chant, angelic arias, writhing rhythms, raucous lyrics and raw visceral power, Orff’s Carmina Burana is an intoxicating powerhouse of a piece for over 300 instrumentalists and voices on a program with Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio Overture and Haydn’s Symphony No. 100, Military.
